Description
This here is a map that shows the nations and regions of my post-apocalyptic universe, with information on each written down and copied from my Tumblr:The first—and most important—nation is the Federation of Reformed States. This nation is based around the pre-apocalypse ideas of democracy, welfare, and individual rights. Because of this, people tend to flock to the Federation to find a better life for them and their families. As a result, it has one of the highest populations of any post-apocalypse state, numbering around 50,000 people.
However, it’s also had a bit of a bad history of imperialism. It quickly spread across the post-war US and swallowed up any tribe it came into contact with. To alleviate any ill-will towards them, the Federation uses its resources to help establish welfare and infrastructure within conquered territory, treating the people fairly and promising them the same rights as any Federation citizen. In addition, the Federation allowed for the creation of the Commonwealth for those still disgruntled by the Federation.
Along with the ideals of democracy and welfare, the Federation also prides itself in its military, having one of the most well-equipped and well-trained armies in the post-war US. It also has its own Special Forces unit called the Ranger Guard, whom are well-known for their advanced armor and discipline.
Their eastern neighbor is the Southern Coalition. This nation is a direct democracy headed by a council of military leaders. Their whole premise is that everybody has a debt from birth that they need to pay once they reach a certain age. If they can’t make it, they’re practically relegated to slavery until they can work off what they owe.
They also have a cult that dominates as the main religion of the land, a strange worship of Robert E. Lee. They idolize him as somebody they see as noble, loyal, and smart in military science. This forms the base of their culture, and what they strive for all citizens to be—even in slavery. They also identify with a “rebel cause” and see the Federation as the new iteration of the Union that fought the Confederacy during the Civil War—despite the fact the Coalition didn’t even secede from the Federation.
Because of their idolization of the military, they pride themselves in having an effective military—one that is a match enough with the Federation’s military to draw constant stalemates. While the Coalition mostly relies on draftees and slave soldiers, they also have their own special forces called the Tigers, based off the Louisiana Tigers. The ranks of the Tigers are mostly of subjugated tribals injected with numerous drugs to keep them savage. Naturally, this unit is used as shock infantry to try and break Federation lines.
Then there’s the Commonwealth—a small enclave created in an agreement between the Federation and numerous tribes that were subjugated by the Federation. As mentioned before, the Commonwealth is a place for people to live if they don’t want to live in the Federation. Technically, however, it’s still considered part of the Federation, though it’s granted autonomy in various matters – namely, its own government and its own military.
The Commonwealth runs as a communalist society, with a council headed by the leaders of villages within its border—whom are also elected by their respective villagers. Along with this, the Commonwealth can also have its own representative in the Federation Parliament.
Despite the Commonwealth’s size, it has an effective military known simply as “The Militia.” They help keep the borders of the Federation secure in the eastern part of the nation, and are the bulwark against the hostile Bloodlands to the east. They also work alongside the Federation in securing part of the northeastern border against the hostile Plain tribes.
The most effective arm of the Commonwealth militia, however, is the Frontier Scouts. These soldiers specialize in traveling outside their borders and exploring the hostile lands around them – mostly to look for danger, but also to weaken any possible threats in the wild. Because of their duty, they’re also adept at surviving out in the wilderness, namely by scrounging for food and shelter as well as hunting if they can manage it. The scouts also have their own unique armor, which offers them good protection while also being lightweight.
The next nation is the smallest one, way out yonder in San Fran Bay Area: New Eden. This is essentially a science hub where some of the brightest minds from the wasteland gather to try and pull humanity out of its slump. They’re mostly carrying on from where things were pre-war, and the vast records they have saved helps them do their job.
Along with science and research, they also do trade – mostly with the Federation. Despite the long journey between the two states, they manage an effective trade route with multiple trader towns dotting the routes. While the Federation mostly trades in resources and protection, New Eden offers scientists and traders to help maintain infrastructure and manage the welfare programs the Federation has.
They currently have multiple research projects going on. One of the more important ones is large radiation scrubbers that clean the air and water – with their prototype currently cleaning the San Francisco Bay. There’s also experiments in nanotechnology, used both for repairing buildings as well as giving humans augmentations. Another and rather lofty goal of theirs is to try and get people back into space and onto other planets—though naturally, this one is going to take much longer than their other projects.
On the very opposite of the spectrum is the region known as the Bloodlands. This region is defined by the squalor of its people and the unforgiving environment.
Much of the population here is made up of slaves, with a small group of slavers and raiders dominating the top of society here. It’s the place with the largest slave market in the wasteland, with slaves coming to and from the Bloodlands daily.
This region is also in a near state of anarchy, with each group of slaver and raider taking their own chunk of territory in the Bloodlands, united only by the slave market there. In addition, they practice a form of cannibalism centered on vampirism. Because of this, each selected leader of the various factions in the Bloodlands are called “counts,” after Count Dracula.
Along with them, there’s the various creatures that reside in the foggy Bloodlands. The most dangerous of these are the pale-skinned ghouls, who squat in buildings and come out at night to feed; and the massive, mutant flea-like monsters that hop around the humid landscape in search of more blood and fresh corpses.
The environment itself is just as dangerous; the blood red fog poisons those that linger too long in it, often driving them to a cannibalistic frenzy.
Equally inhospitable is the Great Bog – where the Great Lake states used to be. A massive flood turned the land into a radioactive bog—and turned the people into xenophobic savages.
Those that wander into the Great Bog are constantly at threat from the inhabitants, who kill anybody that wanders into their swampy home. Especially dangerous are the mudskippers, who hide out in the mud and drag passerbys to their death in the thick mud. The bog has also mutated the people here, giving them gills and scratchier voices. Many are also rumored to be cannibals—especially the Mudskippers, who wear human bones as jewelry.
The wildlife here shared a similar fate – turning into mutant monsters. Most dangerous are the lamprey, who have grown to the size of alligators and now bite chunks out of people instead of taking just blood. Other mutant fish line the beaches, coming out to wage war against the bog folk.
However, trade still goes on in the Great Bog. The biggest is the beer from their Wisconsin breweries, as well as the drug called Bog Jenkem—irradiated swamp gas, pretty much. The high it provides is called “getting lost in the fog”—though, this is also used for those that become addicted to the drug and turn into murderous fiends. The trade there is mostly dominated by the elite bog folk who live in plantations that didn’t go under the bog. The rich bog folk, however, are definitely cannibals.
Outside of that, there’s various loose tribes scattered around the wasteland; in the Southwest, it’s multiple confederations of various, horse-faring animistic tribes. The name given to their confederations is “Khanates,” mostly due to their focus on a nomadic life on horseback and settling into yurt-like tents. While they keep to themselves, they’ll get into occasional border conflicts with the Federation and Coalition. Sometimes, though, they’ll get hired as mercenaries - especially the heavy cavalry that they specialize in.
In the Great Plains area are also various tribes, though these ones are much smaller in composition than the Khanates of the Southwest. They’re also more opportunistic and ruthless, often harassing Federation and Commonwealth lines with raids. Dealing with them is often difficult because of how easily these tribes can melt back into the plains. The Federation and New Eden draw similarities between them and the ancient Scythians because of the tactics they use in warfare.
