The ultra-quick speedruns of Summer Games Done Quick inspired me to start doing speedpaints while watching to challenge my drawing speed. This one I did during the Pokemon Crystal speedrun, which was WILD and hilarious the entire way through. They manipulated their trainer ID to get a Master Ball in Goldenrod, then caught a Raikou which they used to cheese the rest of the game.
Anyway, there was a bid war to name Raikou, and the winning name was "DIO?!?!" I of course could not resist the urge to make memes and thus this picture was born.

What kind of weird Dinosaur looks like that? Clearly looks like something Therapsid.

All you need to know is they're an apex predator from the late Permian (era right before the dinosaurs), they walk on all fours, short tail, long body, big head with large teeth and canines. They sort of look like a Dimetrodon without the sail. Raikou looks nothing like one. The most well known of them is probably Gorgonops.

Pokemon usually exaggerates features (something like the big head and long canines) in their designs and likes to utilize elements, so my guess is if they did one, they'd probably play off them being ancient animals with references to gorgons, so it probably be some sort of poison rock type, themed around the myth of Medusa being able to turn you to stone with a glance. That be my guess.

Well, you. I mean, I already toned down the whole thing.Β Mammals are Therapsids, which in turn are Synapsids, but not all SynapsidsΒ ( i.e. Dimetrodon ) are Therapsids and not all Therapsids ( i.e. Lystrosaurus ) are Mammals. And that is very simplified, leaving out a few cladistic levels. Whatever Raikou is supposed to be, it's some sort of Therapsid.

I only caught the end of the speedrun but from what I'd seen it was easily my favourite run of SGDQ so far. It had me smiling the entire time I was there.

Entei got a movie, Suicune got a game.
Raikou goes down in history as the most game breaking early catch in the entire franchise, master of speedruns.
Pokemon like Deoxys-S, Ninjask, Electrode, etc think they have speed, but real speed is beating the game fastest.
