Description The transition to night was close to unnoticeable, with how the snow clouds blocked out the whole sky. Even now, the winds whipped and the snow fell fast, piling up more and more upon the frozen ground.

Watching from the table near the window, where Horus had been earlier, Solitaire frowned deeply with the lack of moon and stars. It had been far too long since she had seen the night sky. Then again, how long had it been?

She had lost track of time since the day the snowstorm had started, when she, Gale, and Solace had failed their mission at the tower. Each day, they had stayed inside their base and hadn’t done a thing. It somewhat aggravated her, just the thought of having no choice but to not leave, but she knew her team needed the rest. They were probably tired physically – and Solitaire especially took note of this, since the Absol had spent practically all his time in his room. As for her, she was far too mentally exhausted…discovering her fear, failing a mission, and knowing the demise of two pokemon were too much for such a short period of time.

"Something feels so…off…" she whispered quietly, her cheek resting on her hand.

“Things have been plain lately, huh?”

She turned her head away from the window only to find Night standing there a few feet away with his arms crossed. She wondered how long he had been standing there.
He had a very calm, unreadable expression on his face, and now that she had acknowledged him, he took steps closer to the table. “Nothing has been going on since the mission ended.”

“Yeah…” she said slowly. Something felt odd about how Night was staring at her, almost expectantly. She turned away from him to look out the window. “Pretty boring…”

There was a pause in the air. At first she thought that he simply wasn’t going to respond with anything, so she went back to watching the snowflakes gather on the outside window sill. But then she heard a heavy sigh.

“Well…isn’t this how you wanted things?”

She blinked and, looking back at the Kirlia, noticed that his gazed had hardened. But he too was gazing out the window. His orange eyes flickered down to her to take in her questioning look. “Silence? Normality? Without a certain someone, that’s all that it’s been here. And you don’t seem very worried about Solace. Even after what happened this morning.”

Her eyebrows pulled together. Yes, now that he brought it back up, she remembered.

--------

It was before she left to find Palette’s studio again. Gale was going to see her off and wish her luck, and she was just unfolding her special navy blue blanket when he spoke up.

“Huh? Miss Solitaire…isn’t that…?”

She looked up at him, seeing his confusion. “Hmm? You mean my blanket? What about it?”

“Um well…why are you bringing it with you?”

The Sneasel turned back to the fabric in her claws, her gaze oddly calm and gentle.

“…when I was a kid, this thing used to always shelter me from the cold. And now is the perfect time to use it outside again.”

Hearing the click of a door opening, she rose her head and noticed a certain red Absol padding out of his room. His head was lowered in a sort of exhausted manner, and he turned around to close the door behind him.

“Well, there you are Solace…geez, are you hibernating or what? It’s 3 in the afternoon.”

He looked at her and Solitaire’s eyebrows pulled together, seeing the lines under his eyes. He stayed so long in his room, and yet it looked as if he never got any sleep.

“Sorry….” he responded quietly. At first Solitaire simply eyed him, but then he pulled the corners of his mouth up into a sheepish smile. “I had trouble sleeping last night is all, hehe.”

He blinked and his smile fell. Solitaire could see that he caught sight of the money bag she was holding, along with her blanket.

“Are you going somewhere?”

“Huh? Oh yeah. I’m going to go see someone.”

“….in…this weather…?”

Solitaire raised an eyebrow. For some reason, the strangest look of wariness and hesitance formed his expression and it was almost like he was staring at her to deliver these feelings to her, whatever they were.

“…well yeah. Snow can’t stop me. I won’t be out for too long. I just need to pick something up, and maybe even talk to someone for a bit, which you know is something I do not do often. So.”

He still looked uncertain and something about the intensity in Solace’s eyes bothered her. He was searching her eyes, and the Sneasel could only wonder what was up with him. She was prepared to argue or defend herself even, but then Solace sighed and broke eye contact, instead looking off to the side with half-lidded, tired eyes.

“Just…promise you’ll be careful out there, okay? Be safe…”

“Yeah, yeah, don’t worry about me, I’ll be fine.”

She stared at the Absol for a second more and then shaped the blanket in her claws appropriately before throwing it around her neck. It mainly grouped around her shoulders, but then draped and cascaded down her back, reaching her tail feathers.

Just as she was tying it into a knot on her chest, to secure it, a voice broke the silence in the air.

“Hey Sol…” Solace started softly. Upon looking back at him, stopping her claws in the process, she saw that he was gazing at the cloth. And hidden behind this gaze, she thought she could faintly see a bit of hope.

“What is it?”

“…when you come back…could I borrow your blanket for a bit…?

The question genuinely surprised her, and she actually wondered if he had really asked it.

But her immediate response was to glare at him, and even now, she couldn’t remember what his expression looked like, seeing as she had been too busy reacting to his question.

“You have your own blanket, Solace. Just use that. Or borrow Gale’s.” She had said roughly, and right afterwards, she turned away from him, not saying another word.

Solitaire broke out of this memory and realized she hadn’t thought too much about it. Her blanket was much too special to her for her to just hand it over, making her oddly protective of it. In fact, she would even be hesitant to give it to Gale. It just so happened that since it was Solace, she naturally did what she usually did and treated him the way she always did. Was he staying in his room because he was sulking?

“If he wants to be alone, then so be it. Let him have his solitude. He’ll come around.” she replied calmly to Night, who only sighed louder in exasperation before placing a hand on his forehead.

“Don’t tell me you haven’t noticed a thing.”

She remained silent, answering him with a stare while waiting for him to explain. He shook his head.

“So you really haven’t noticed the changes in Solace…? The lack if sincerity in his smiles or laughs? The absence of jokes? Or just the simple fact that he barely leaves his room? Honestly, Sol…don’t you pay attention to him at all?”

“I…”

She didn’t know how to respond. She sort of noticed some of the things, but now that he was clearly pointing them out to her, she was just now really seeing them. He made it sound a lot worse than she had seen it…

“I don’t like the silence as much as you do. In fact, it would be nice if it were…fixed.” He emphasized, and she saw his eyes clearly flash over to the side – towards Solace’s door – for a second.
“If you wanted things to be like this, then fine. But if you have a problem… maybe do something about it, Sol. I think only you can really talk to him. He always hides behind a smile whenever he speaks to Gale.”

He seemed to sadden as he said this. Solitaire could see it; even Night was worried. But he recovered and met her eyes with his, his gaze unwavering.
“Of course, in the end, it’s your decision. I’m just saying; without Solace, things are so…plain. Don’t you think?”

He didn’t wait for a response. Right afterwards, he spun around and began to walk to the other side of the room, towards his door at the far right.
“I’m a little tired, so I’ll be heading to bed. ‘Night Sol.”

She couldn’t respond while trying to process what had happened and what he had said, but she snapped out of it when she heard the click of his closing door. She frowned deeply – it wasn’t every day that she was told what to do by someone younger than her. She didn’t like it. But there was some truth in his words.

Solitaire turned her head and stared right at Solace’s door. It was true…she had been so focused on their failure and her own self that she hadn’t tried to see if there was anything going on with her partner. That, and when it came to the Absol, she assumed that he would be fine. It was Solace, after all.

Then again…who was she to know who Solace was?

You may remember from page two (miamaha.deviantart.com/art/PMD… that Gale mentioned something about "Solitaire" to Solace. Well this is what he was referring to. :3

And oh look, a glimpse at the inside of their house. >xDD Stillworkingonit. But the door you see there is Solace's. The door from part four was Solitaire's. c:

But you know, it's really nice to see Night more. c: Anyway, enjoy~

Just like the two sides, and how they are so different, but in a way, they are kinda the same. It's really interesting to see the two sides of him.

I'm really glad that The Night Baskers' story is continuing. <3 Come on Sol, stop being a grump and talk to Solace! :v ...But in all seriousness, I can imagine that it's easy to think Solace would be able to handle everything himself since he's usually so cheerful. He's pretty good in hiding his insecurities.

I love the way you put Night in the spotlight this time!
Well, I know, this is mainly about Solitaire and Solance, but seeing a bit more of Night from time to time is a really good thing. That is what he was frustrated about, too, isn't it? That most of the time, Gale is the "owner" of his body. Or something like this.
And another question. Because something like that has been showing in a different chapter, too. Does Night like Solitaire? In a romantic way, I mean...

I do too~ X3 Glad you think so as well~ c:
As for whether or not that's true, I can't confirm or deny. uwu But nice guess~
FFFF I did not expect that question. xD Wow, what gave you that impression? But uh well, Gale is like 14 and Solitaire is 21, so that's....xD And she's more like his...Mom...or even older sister...
So no, he doesn't. XP As much as I don't like confirming and denying things, yeah...xD

I just realized something. "...shelter me from the cold..." ...She's an Ice type.

When Solace asked for her blanked, I kind of got the impression that Solitaire... won't be around for much longer.

Sad, but good chapter.

I'm curious to what you mean exactly. >:'V And as much as I don't like to confirm or deny anything, I can say this: well, I have a headcanon. And that's that, even if she's an ice type, she's half ice type. So there are certain cold temperatures she can handle, but others, not so much. And sneasels tend to live in forests areas.

But anyway. XP Thanks!
