Description
When I first saw a photograph of the karst peaks of Guilin, China thirty years ago, I couldn't believe a landscape like this really existed. The area remained at the top of my 'life list' of places to see since then. When I finally found the opportunity to visit, I wandered alone on the riverbanks and met a cormorant fisherman who showed me his traditional methods. They fish at night and the lantern attracts fish toward the raft so the cormorant can dive in and catch them. The fishermen tie a loose string around the cormorant's neck so they can't swallow it completely, and the men pull out the fish and store them in a basket. This method of fishing has existed for over a thousand years here. I decided to call the image 'Timeless' in honor of the men and their tradition. It is still possible to find the 'old China' if you know where to look.Related content

This was taken near the village of XingPing in SouthEast China. Guilin is the nearest large town. Thanks for commenting.

I've always been fascinated by those peaks myself but due to a morbid fear of flying, I doubt I'll ever get there. The clarity, the rich colors, the texture of the wood in the raft, the reflections in the water, make this a world class shot..National Geographic worthy and a well deserved DD. Superb work!

I saw a film about china at school some weeks ago where this place was visited, too. It is still fascinating for me that still such places exist where people life like they used to in the past.
I think it is a beautiful photo.

I would LOVE to visit Guilin one day. It's a place that I too have long wanted to visit, and this photograph only reinforces that desire. Fantastic composition, LOVE the lighting and warm colors, and the history of the subject is a nice added touch. Honestly, it's just so perfect it looks more like a painting than a photograph. Amazing, amazing work, my friend. Kudos!

Seems like a story you would read about in a book.
Amazing to hear about things like this that actually happen every day. Seems like we live in a whole different world...
Great capture

I've visted China but never Guilin. I want to go there so bad, and this picture almost tears my heart out making me want to go there. Wonderful text to go with your picture as well.
