Description
When I first saw a photograph of the karst peaks of Guilin, China thirty years ago, I couldn't believe a landscape like this really existed. The area remained at the top of my 'life list' of places to see since then. When I finally found the opportunity to visit, I wandered alone on the riverbanks and met a cormorant fisherman who showed me his traditional methods. They fish at night and the lantern attracts fish toward the raft so the cormorant can dive in and catch them. The fishermen tie a loose string around the cormorant's neck so they can't swallow it completely, and the men pull out the fish and store them in a basket. This method of fishing has existed for over a thousand years here. I decided to call the image 'Timeless' in honor of the men and their tradition. It is still possible to find the 'old China' if you know where to look.Related content

You're whole gallery is amazing. This, "Timeless", I like in particular because I saw once a documentary on TV about cormorant fishermen in China and their old tradition simply mesmerized me. You were so lucky to be there! If it's not top secret, I would like to know what camera did you use and what settings because the picture turned out amazing!

Great shot; I think it was either in Nat Geo or Smithsonian. I thought the same thing about the peaks; I'd always seen them in paintings and thought they were stylized until I saw photos of them.

This image is beyond amazing. I had to check the category just to make sure it wasn't a photomanipulation, and when I read your comment I was even more intrigued. I never even knew that cormorants could be used to fish! I hope those fishermen treat the beautiful birds well...

I think this is a photos that, to me, pretty much reaches perfection. Not only is it technically correct and includes an amazing landscape, it captures a simply awe inspiring story. A beautiful combination of landscape/natural and journalistic photography, something I am finding myself striving for more often!
