Beautiful work! I'm especially envious of the background. XD But I also love how it you can see an entire story in the composition. (if that makes sense? sorry, it's 8am and I'm functioning on a half hour's sleep. XD) But anyway, a beautiful painting, and even more importantly, beautiful composition, well deserving a DD.

It doesn't look like sadness so much as resigned feelings--maybe hopelessness. Maybe a sense of inability to escape duty--and unwillingness to do what he's been asked to do. It's very touching and there is no doubt about the emotion in those eyes.
