Description Final design of the Jabberwocky for Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland".

I highly recommend the Art of Alice book "Alice in Wonderland: A Visual Companion", it's 256 pages packed with concept art and behind the scenes photos from the movie.

So far, every piece of Jabberwock art I've seen has been far superior to the actual effects seen in the movie. Even this image, which is the final design, and should be the same as the one in the film, has so much more life and character than the thing in the movie, and hearkens back to the original design [link] much more. I guess a lot was lost in the translation from art to movie.

I also wish the filmmakers would have realized that "Jabberwocky" is the name of the poem, while the name of the creature itself is "Jabberwock."

Anyway, enough ranting about things that don't have anything to do with your art. Every piece of concept work you've posted for this movie has been surpassingly good, and this one's no exception. Awesome!

Its a wonderful design and I can understand working under direction, but I still felt a twinge of nostalgia for the fishy eyed, buck toothed jabberwocky when I first saw this guy on screen.

what is a...new jersey devil?

SlapMaster In reply to AlexTenshi [2010-05-05 13:46:14 +0000 UTC]

The New Jersey Devil is a creature that lurks in the back woods of southern New Jersey in a one million acer patch of forest, swamp, and farmland called the Pine Barrens since 1732. Said to be the 13th child of Mother Leeds when pregnant with him said cursed him by saying (Let this child be a devil). Soon the night came the the beast was to be born. When he came out he was a normal baby but then turned into a monster. It killed it's 12 other siblings and then flew up the chimney and into the woods. The beast is depicted to be a composite creature made up of different animal parts. It has the Head of a Horse, Antlers of a Deer, The Tusks os a Pig, The Body of a Kangaroo, The Arms of a Ape, The Wings of a Bat, The Legs of a Cow, And the Tail of a Alligator. It's said to be between 4-8 feet tall, Has a 10 foot wing span, Piercing yellow eyes and is said to breathe Fire.

If you really knew what you were talking about you wouldn't be calling it the "New Jersey Devil" Its known as the "Jersey Devil" ...just sayin

Hey you asked toots.

AlexTenshi In reply to SlapMaster [2010-05-06 19:53:15 +0000 UTC]

not really.
i was being silly and pretending to be the disney alice (since the person above me said "Jabberwocky!!!! somebody call alice!"), hence the icons. they didn't have a jabberwocky in the disney version, so disney alice wouldn't know what one was, also hence me saying "oh i'm sorry, i seem to have brought the wrong alice", as they so often mentioned in the tim burton film...
