Alpine Northstar: A flowering shrub with pink or white flowers, cultivated in gardens across Ardea alongside wyneflowers, dwarf willows, and alpine currants. A related species, lowland northstar, grows in the Shallows. It is more tolerant of shade but its flowers are less showy. The leaves and flowers are harvested by shallows elves to extract oils used for polishing and treating wood.
Bellflower: Several species of blue or purple-flowered herbs with thin leaves and downturned cup-shaped flowers on long stalks. Its leaves and roots are both edible, used in places of spinach and radishes respectively, and many are grown for purely aesthetic purposes.
Birdcatcher Tree: In spite of its name and its general shape, this is not a tree but rather a giant fungus, found in the depths of the Deep Woods. The trunk (a huge woody stalk) stretches more than two hundred feet high at maturity, the flat top a spidery net of thin, sticky filaments (its hyphae) that it uses to snare passing insects, seeds, and indeed small birds. Its melon-sized spores are borne on stiff wings like a glider, and can be hollowed out to make alchemical missiles.
Breathwort: A common herb with pale purple flowers and large leaves with pale spots. Thanks to its ease of care and medicinal properties it is widely planted in all but the coldest of the Baronies. The sap can be extracted and boiled into a thick syrup that eases chronic breathing problems, including those caused by altitude and pressure sicknesses.
Bride’s Pincushion: An alpine flower found in the Barrier and Baronies alike, it has finely divided, fern-like leaves and broad purple flowers on long stalks, though sometimes flowers may be pale yellow or white. Its flowers are an ingredient for a particularly useful salve used to treat skin irritations, hives, and insect bites.
Carpet Daisy: Low groundcover with spade-shaped leaves and white and yellow flowers resembling small daisies. Unlike many plants they flower almost continuously so long as the temperature remains above freezing. They are widespread in the Baronies, and the young, edible leaves and flower buds are gathered in quantity in Rallus when other crops fail. A “daisy-picker” is a derogatory term for a Rallushan.
