Description
This is one of my newer sculptures (one of the two dozen half-finished projects I started this last month that I actually managed to finish). I'm not even sure what I originally intended with this piece, other than being inspired by deep sea angler fish.I put a lot of work into sculpting the details, and then ended up obliterating much of that detail because it made this piece look too much like a model of a real fish, and it's not a real fish, it's a strange entity from my subconscious, perhaps masquerading as a fish. Anyway, I'm glad I made those changes, because otherwise I think it would have ended up as a much tamer piece.
The materials that went into it vary, but it's mostly sculpey, with a lot of acrylic medium on top.

I thought this was made of vegetables at first! It's very eery looking! I love it

I know I know what a fish from the Alien movies would look like. I kinda looks like a deep-sea angler fish moved to the surface, adapted to freshwater, swam up the Amazon, and had a love child with a Payara.
In other words, very cool!

Man, if that's the case, I hope that Payara was a freak in the sack, because that's a lot of effort.
Thanks for the very specific praise!

They are pretty freaky looking. They're called vampire fish for a reason.
No problem.

So much love. Brings me back memories of being a kid again by being all OCD about Dinosaurs.

great textures and over all feel to the piece.
I love the fact that there are no eyes, only the indication of eye bumps....Definitely adds to the eerie feel of the piece.
i saw this featured in Evan Campbell's journal and had to fave it.
Excellent work!
Take care

Thanks!
The eyes/no eyes issue actually comes up in my work a lot. I often (as in this piece) go to the trouble of sculpting eyes on it at the beginning only to decide they should be covered up. There are actually a couple places on this Weird Fish that I put a lot of detail work into that I ended up covering to serve the overall impact.

Great work. I agree that it is more powerful as a more abstract/surreal piece than if it had been more illustrative.
