Many parents don't like the idea of their daughters being physically punished. But obviously many tutors rely on use of the cane or birch to maintain discipline, and indeed take great enjoyment from their use.

Hence each day outside many private classrooms kneels a lone maid. At the end of the day she will be called into the classroom, bent over a desk at the front and the tutor will read out each indiscretion of the pupil or pupils, then administer a strike to the buttocks of the poor maid. A few extra on the end are added for luck, and then the pupils dismissed, hopefully to ponder overnight how they could have avoided causing the poor maid to be flogged so brutally.
