I dont feel like he was so much 'fooled' as he was just mindfucked. He KNEW and stated he was being tricked, but then he got wayyy outnumbered and his heart was being messed with. It'd be akin I think to say, knowing there's an alien running around posing as your loved ones and friends- but it takes the form of your beloved dead pet. YOU KNOW it is fake, cos you're pet's not there. You KNOW it's definitely a fake when there's several 100 of them more now, crowding around you, making sad big wet eyes and mewing or whimpering at you- it's still enough to get you really caught offguard and know you're trapped regardless.
