Description

(This is part two of the review, look here in case you want my opinion of the characters, spoilers for the ending and some bosses, and the rank I gave it. Part one of the review is here: DR#13: Bug Fables   )

Characters:

Micro: So to begin with right out of the bat, we actually love the the characters in this game. Vi's might be an sassy, greedy, arrogant bee that would like rewards from those that tries to ask her to do something, but she is a hilarious, sarcastic angry smol child you can't help but love as you want to give her a hug.

Shekra: Totally worth the head beating from the dumb beemarang. Vi might come across as a bratty child in some situation, but she still has well meaning attitude to some bugs in one way or another, even if she begrudgingly doesn't get a reward no thanks to Leif and Kabbu at times.

Micro: We mentioned Kabbu being somewhat of a dorky beetle with a warrior spirit, but that's still something I can't help but love about the guy as he means well and is trying to help everyone as much as he can while either giving some strong advice to avoid danger or trying to deal with his team mates as they more or less escalate the situation that might make things worse.

Shekra: Leif is another character you can't help but love as he deals with the fact that he is clearly a bug out of time and everything has changed since the last time he seen the Ant kingdom. Yet that doesn't stop the moth from a being a calm, well manner bug that can be blunt as a anvil and doesn't take anyone's crap and retorts with a deadpan remark that you can't help but laugh at while also snickering at the fact that Leif's biggest weakness is anything involving food and whatever he thinks is cute. Its rather amusing and great to hear the characters talk with either each other or with a different character, with the team having plenty of things to say with about themselves, the enemies they face, or the bugs or places they meet or visit. Its rather hard to not stop what you are doing to talk with someone just to see what one of the teammates has to say to the character before wanting to see what the team also thinks of the character. These three might come across as three misfit, but as the story continues, you can tell that three care for each other while maturing more yet still has what make them what they individually.

Micro: However, it isn't also Vi, Kabbu, and Leif that I say I like as well in this game. While there are plenty of characters in this game, a lot of them gives you one reason or another to remember them, even if they are NPC and not side characters. For starters, there's a bee kid that hits on Vi and she's not having any of it, yet its still amusing interact with the bug as he have some different things to say.

Shekra: One character that sticks out to me is this one bug name Kenny. Guy has no baring on the story nor does he has an actually side quest, but its interesting to talk with him as he actually visits other towns that you also visit as he wants to see about what feels like home to him, only for him to see that its the very first place you meet him as he confirms what felt like home to him with each interaction he has something different to say to the team and I can't help but enjoy what he has to say as he gives his view of each place he went to. Another character that easily sticks out to me are the chiefs you can interact with, they might have extremely little to say even with their side quests, but its still amusing to see them.

Micro: Another character that sticks out to me is this adorable marshmellow name Samira. Girl might be a shy butterfly buts great to see her in each town you visit as you ask her to play a soundtrack of the game as you progress the story. One of my personal favorite characters you have little interactions is Aria, the priestess that is loyal to Venus who is another character I can't help but love in this game. Aria may have little interaction with the party, buts fun to talk to her as well as have small fun mini boss fight. And then we get to adorable little turd that is Tanjerin, this cute little idiot can be seen trying to lift a massive rock that the party tries to persuade him to stop before he hurt himself, which he ignores even after his horn got broken off and stolen. If I can find a plushie of the little idiot, I more than happily try to get it as I can't help but love the round dumbass.

Shekra: We can't and forget about the side characters as well, even the antagonist. The Wasp king, while not showing up until about half way into the game, does a good job in demonstrating why he is quite the intimidating force, despite not much to know about him without really looking around to find his background and find out why he is hellbent to seek power. Turns out he was abandon in the dead lands and somehow survive the harsh area before managing to get to the wasp kingdom he blend in before leaving again and finding the crown he wears that allows him to control a lot of the wasps. And the fact that he can put up a fight is saying something considering he was fighting everyone before Maki showed up.

Micro: And Maki is no joke either, but we'll talk about that part later, for now, I do have to say I do like Maki as well. Guy may came across as a bit of a ass here and there, but the guy is quite the capable swords man that shows to keep a level head and fight with all his might to protect Elizant and everyone around him, including his team, his sister, Kina, and new member, Yin. We didn't know how to incorporate these two in the story, but I guess we add them here as they do leave some of a impact. Kina can seem like a rather clingy overbearing sister that doesn't seem to like Yin for some reason, but she's just looking out for Maki. And as for Yin, she's a very precious marshmallow that i think deserves a hug from everyone and that's all I got to say.

Shekra: Another set character I defiantly want to have a few say is Mothiva and Zasp. The two maybe rivals to our trio with Mothiva coming across as a selfish, rude, egotistical diva that wants thing to herself, but I can't help but love the interaction she has with the team as Vi and Leif waste no time butting heads with her and having things to say. And as for Zasp, guy did came across as a rude ass, but he does become a rather cool dude that I can't help but like as the story continues, with Vi and Leif still not holding back on some witty comments on him.

Micro: The one characters I got to say that I think I was surprise to like as much as the cast was Elizant. Before I got to chapter six, I already had the impression that Elizant was going to be a rather calculated ruler or someone who might become colder as the story goes on and we get more artifacts for her. Its was around chapter five I was half expecting the game to force us to have some kind of boss fight with her considering we seen her have an attack poise twice. Yet I was actually a bit surprise to see Elizant's reasons for wanting to find the sapling and sees how much of a danger the Wasp King has become that she choose to go to the termite kingdom. And with a decision Elizant decides in the end of the game, much like Leif, I couldn't help but have some respect for Elizant by the end of the game... still wouldn't mind a boss fight with her.

Bosses:

Shekra: We shouldn't go to long with this segment, though, we have been wrong in the past in terms of thinking we wouldn't go long. Boss in this game functions the same most other bosses you will deal with in any other turn base RPG, in that you smack the boss down to zero health while hoping you don't get destroy from just nothing but tanking hits while strategizing, with bosses later having some difference to other bosses that helps them stick out.

Micro: That said, the bosses in this game are rather fun to fight against, for the most part, and you will most likely remember them for one reason or another, especially if you do this game with the hard medal on. We won't go in depth with every boss as there are a lot of bosses in this game. Most bosses will have basic attacks with some having something that may give a status effect on the party, hit them like a truck, or summon smaller enemies that serves nothing but to be a minor nuisance that's in the way. Thankfully, even with the minor back up some of the bosses may have, you shouldn't worry too much as long you think a bit of what to do next and maybe plan what medals you want at the time.

Shekra: With that said, we would like to give a mention to some of the bosses that sticks out to us. One of my favorite bosses is the Watcher, having a mysterious and other worldly like appearance, his attacks can be rough if you not being careful. Also has a very nice boss theme.

Micro: One of my favorite bosses is Carmina, her attacks are rather random that you can't tell if her attacks will get stronger, she'll poison you, or even make it where you can't use skills or items, she defiantly can keep you on you toes. Another of my favorite boss, which we should mention is that we like most of the bosses in this game, including the final boss, another of my favorite boss is the Heavy Drone B-33, the defense system that was protecting the third artifact. Thing can hit like a truck and summon smaller drones, but using Vi's skills and attacks with everyone else taking pot shots at the mechanical menace is amusing to see. Great boss music as well, in fact, we might as well say this now, this game has a really good soundtrack to listen to, give a listen when you have the chance.

Shekra: Another two bosses I like, mainly on how weird and me having questions of their origins, are the Zommoth, the very creature that more or less killed the roaches in Snakemouth Den, and the false Monarch, as strange boss that you can hunt down for a bounty while wondering what in the world the thing is and what it is doing in the location you found it in.

Micro: Which brings up the bane of my existence every time I play this game and that is the bounty boss, the Devourer. This overgrown poison fly trap hits like a freight train, can spit poison, summon enemies to make things more pain in the ass to deal with, and worst of all is that he can also randomly swallow a party member which means you now have to do whatever you can to hurt the overgrown weed to spit the party member out, so you better hope it wasn't you biggest damage dealer or anyone but Kabbu that can the plant any time they want, cause the boss fight just got longer no thanks to the fact that you are probably dealing with the other enemies the Devourer summon to annoy you.

Shekra: With said, every still builds up to the one boss you been preparing for.

Finale:

Micro: With everyone gather, everyone makes their way to the Giant's Lair, a massive place where things get rather weird to say the least. The place is eerily dark as strange creatures, dead landers, roam the land with giant creatures in the back watching out for anything to get in their sight. What doesn't help is that Venus can no longer help at certain point as her buds has reached the maximum range they can go.

Shekra: After having to deal with a swarm of dead landers and scaling a refrigerator, everyone makes a rather surprising discovery that they found a town full of roaches that are still alive somehow, despite living in this harsh landscape of disturbing monsters. Its here that everyone finds out that the Everlasting Sapling is further ahead, and the Wasp King is getting near it, but refuses to let anyone else go, especially since Elizant has decided that she wants to destroy the Sapling, considering the thing too dangerous to be around anymore.

Micro: Leif actually spoke to the leader of the roaches, telling them what happened to him in Snakemouth Den, the experiments that were discover and why they were made in the first place, all to try to replicate the Everlasting Sapling. Leif convince the leader to let them through, letting them realize that the Sapling has done nothing but cause misery to everyone that was even slightly involve with the Sapling.

Shekra: With the ok signal, everyone charges after the Wasp king, trying to stop the mad man before he can get to the Sapling. He uses his fire magic to stop everyone, but our team sees that they are more or less ok thanks to the broach Vanessa gave them, protecting them from the dangerous fire spell the Wasp king tried to use. The team battle the Wasp King, nearly beating him before he manages to pull a fast one to stun the team long enough to use the artifact to release the seal and reveal the Everlasting Sapling........ only to see the the thing has wilted.

Micro: Ok, that's pretty funny like the mushroom scene in Snakemouth Den. However, the Wasp King was not going to put up with this crap of the Sapling being useless to him and decides to snatch the thing and ate the thing whole. This does not go well for our team to say the least as now the Wasp King has become the Everlasting King, fill with a lot of power.

Shekra: Still, the team battles the king not wanting him to escape and becoming more power than he just became. After a rather long tough fight, the king tries to obliterate the the team with one powerful spell, however, he stop as his body started to react rather violently from eating the Sapling. As it turns out, the Sapling has proven to be far too much for the Wasp King to handle and his body transform into an ordinary tree, with no magic trace in its body.

Micro: With the king finally defeated and things going slightly back to normal, everyone makes their way back home, ready to celebrate the long journey this tale has told. Later, Kabbu request the team for him to pay a visit to the place where they fought the beast so he can pay respect to his fallen friends, making a small grave for them before he, Vi, and Leif, goes off to where ever they wish to go to.

Shekra: While things may not have gone the way some of the characters have plan, I think this was a nice story to look at all the way to the end.

Micro: Indeed, however, we are not done just yet.

Bonus:

Micro: So upon beating the game, you get a few extra things. For starters, if you bought a house from a bee in the hive, you'll have access to a house in the ant kingdom, which I recommend doing as the house give the team a place to live and a free place to heal. Besides that, you also get some trophy rewards to show your achievements, like the crown of the Wasp King for beating the game, a gold trophey for doing all the achievements, and several other stuff, like taking on an trial in the game call the Cave of Trials, which is also where you can fight an optional boss that I didn't know was there. Another thing to note is that you can get some cheat codes that is given to you to write done for beating specific tasks on certain things like some minigames. The cheats codes varies of what they can do, so you'll most likely have to look them up online to see what they do exactly.

Shekra: Another thing that happens after you beat the game is you do get an epilogue where you have some requests to do, like Kabbu's request to go pay respect to his fallen friends we mentioned in the finale. However, that's not the only thing to do as you also have a boss fight with another team call team Slacker. They did showed up in the story a few times, but we didn't how to properly put them in the summary as what they do in terms of story is very little, but as you walk around Bugaria, you'll get acquainted with the two well enough. That being said, I hope you enjoy becoming a punching back to team Slacker as they are anything but the name they are given. They hit ridiculously hard that it feels like someone slapped you with a building and hit so much you'll think you are dealing with a one mosquito army with one of them. However, if you do beat the duo, you do get one of the two's weapon as a trophy to hang in your home.

Micro: However, that's not the only boss fight to do in the epilogue. As it turns out, Maki asked the team to help him and Kina with Yin. Something we neglect to mentioned about Yin is that she is still a caterpillar that have yet to evolve into a moth. It isn't till now that she becomes a pupa and needs to be at a certain spot and be protected from enemies until she evolves. Once this task is done, Maki will thank the team and even offer to have a fight with the team, with everyone wanting to see which of them is the ultimate team. And boy, does Maki, Kina and Yin know who to put up a fight with Vi, Kabbu and Leif. Still a fun tough boss fight, and if you win, you get Maki's sword to hang back home as well. There are still some trophies to get in the game, but I don't know how to get some of them, in fact, I didn't even know you could fight team Slacker until I replayed this game, which makes me wonder if the game was patched since after I played the game last year or if I somehow missed the requests that badly somehow.

Shekra: Well, either way, I say fighting Maki and his team is a nice way to end this epilogue, and end the game as well.

Conclusion:

Micro: Phew, talk about a long review of a game that in all honestly, I consider a really good game to try out. The game has good story, hilarious dialogue that can make someone laugh while giving out good characters, and a great soundtrack.

Shekra: Honestly, its kind of hard for me to come out and mention some bad parts of the game, there is a bit of some problems that can be consider nitpicking but we might as well bring up. We mentioned the puzzles and how some people have an issue with them, specifically Vi's beemarang. We already mentioned that we didn't had that much of a problem with the puzzles, but we figure we might as well remind that this game does has puzzles you will have to solve if you want to get somewhere with some parts of this game. Other then that, we had a real fun time playing this game for this review, and we hope you all would be willing to try the game out, despite the fact we spoil practically a lot of the game at this point.

Micro: Well, we put the "Spoilers, Obviously" in the reviews for a reason, we're not holding back on things we want to talk about. Anyway, after debating, we decided to give the game the platinum rank, heavily recommending this game to rpg lovers, anyone that wants either a nice story or cute cast of characters or anyone that wants a game that feels like Paper Mario.

Shekra: So, what exactly you want to do next for the Derpy Review?

Micro: Honestly, I have no idea of what I want to do next for Derpy Review. Part of me wants to do a marathon or sort of games with us tackling the Mario series. Though part of me wants to talk about something that has been in my back log for a long time, like the fallout series. But another part of me wants to talk about something recent that I would like to talk about, and that is the Mass Effect series, or at least the first game with the legendary edition. And yet, part of me wants to do a marathon involving Sonic since this year is the 30th anniversary of the blue blur.... and boy that's going to be an interesting review to talk about as I brace the door hinges.

Shekra: So in other words, you have no idea and are debating if you want to make a poll?

Micro: More or less.

Shekra: Well, while Micro is debating whether or not to trust you guys with the next Derpy Review, we hope you all have a good day.

Micro & Shekra: Bye.
