STORY: (pre-trial story, 681 words).
The head of Zyath Kennels, Rika Hanoka, paced back and forth across the wooden floor of the lodge that she and her dogs were staying in. A cell phone was held up to her ear, and she both visibly and audibly came across as anxious as she spoke and paced, paced and spoke. "They've split up our dogs, Zai. Yes! Don't give me that! Of COURSE I'm reading the form correctly. I have it right here!"
In her hand not holding up the phone, Rika held the entry form for the second round of the World Hunting Trials. The paperwork detailed directions for reaching the lodge and the show grounds, listed the dogs entered and their previous scores, the teams that each dog was participating on in this round, and a slew of details outlining the main event: the boar hunt. What Rika was up in arms about was the team composition. It was common knowledge that for a boar hunt, two different types of dogs were required. A bay dog was responsible for tracking, chasing, and holding the boar at bay by barking and howling, while a catch dog physically held it in place using force until the hunter could come to dispatch it. Zyath's Nudari were all obviously bay dogs; that wasn't the problem. The problem lied in the fact that across four teams, Zyath had at least one dog in three of them. The four were no longer together like they were in the first round.
"I... I don't like this, Zai. They put two of our most inexperienced hunters together, Harle and Quryan. The two barely have any experience hunting together. It's just my luck that the littermates didn't get put together." Rika looked over her shoulder toward the large bed against the far wall. Zyath's most experienced hunter, Joltivolt, lay curled up on the plush surface with her half-brother Avi. The dogs were getting their final rest in before being taken out in the field. "I would have even been happy with Jolti and Quryan being together, but... I mean... On one hand, I'm GLAD they're together so they can help each other versus all of them being alone, but you as well as I both know having all four dogs together would have been far better. Oh! And I STILL have to call to inquire how the hunt is going to work because it doesn't say here if I'm actually hunting three times, once for each team or are complete strangers going to be hunting my dogs for two of the three teams? I'm not okay with this; I'm not okay with ANY of this."
On the floor of the bedroom, the other two dogs had staked out their own spaces. Quryan was happily munching on the remains of a victory bone given to him after the last round. His striped tail thumped happily on the floor, and he paid little mind to his handler's distressed state. Harle, on the other hand, sat by the sliding glass door out looking the lodge's shared wooden deck. Her ears twitched and rotated and she flicked her glance back and forth from Rika to the gloomy, overcast outdoors. The older dog must have had a sense of what was to come.
Dodging Quryan on the floor for the umpteenth time, Rika ended her call and sat her phone down on the dresser. Speaking to her husband hadn't made her feel any better, but it was good to get it off of her chest. The four were in for a difficult hunt and Rika hoped, no PRAYED, that the dogs wouldn't end up getting themselves hurt. It would be unfortunate for any of the four to suddenly become disqualified due to an injury, especially before the round in home territory: hare hunting in Egypt.
For the time being, she'd let the dogs rest and relax and hope for the best. Fingers crossed for passing scores and no injuries!
