You know what's infuriating? It's never explained WHY he can't fly in the first place. Is it down to his immaturity? Well THAT can't be right, because he literally hasn't changed ONE BIT over the course of a grand total of TWENTY-EIGHT YEARS. Is it because his wings are too small? Nope, they're MORE than enough. So why would Palutena trust so much into an agent who's capabilities are so limited?

I personally think it's because since all the other Angels were turned to stone by Medusa, Pit didn't have a chance to learn how to fly from them.

Well, it's not much, but in Uprising there is a bit of dialogue between Pit, Palutena and Hades. Hades asks why "Pitty" can't fly, Pit gets really defensive, and Palutena says something along the lines of "Oh it's fine, his wings just don't work right." (Probably not exact but I'm bad with quotes)
So, handicap I guess?

But, see, that's what I like about Pit. He doesn't let his handicap get in the way. We never find out why he has it, but it doesn't stop him from being REALLY good at what he does.

It's possible that it's related to Icarus's story.
He was using wings made out of wax to fly, but he flew too close to the sun which destroyed the wings, and Icarus ultimately fell into a lake where he drowned.

Well, yeah, it's obvious he's based off of Icarus, but Pit's wings aren't fake. He has no excuse. :I

I don't mean that he's just based off Icarus, it's also as a metaphor.
The wings of wax is Pit's inability and wish to fly, the sun burning the wings is (obviously) the limits of Palutena's power of flight, and the drowning is most likely how Pit became an angel.
I get that the game is called Kid Icarus and shares similar qualities to the actual story, but I think it goes deeper than that in terms of Pit's handicapped wings.
I've read my fair share of fanfiction and theories too, but I certainly haven't heard of the chicken theory. XD
I also think we need to think logically concerning Dark Pit as well, because despite being a carbon copy, he's not entirely just a dark reflection of Pit, as we all know. Β Surely there must be some kind of proper problem with the wings, otherwise Dark would have been able to fly on his own. Β Even the arrangement of feathers can affect flight, because in zoos and stuff, they clip birds' feathers in a way that prevents them from flying, but still doesn't ruin their wings.
Maybe Pit's feathers didn't grow right, or something happened that caused permanent damage?

Do you know what makes this even sadder? Β
I've learned that there are some pokemon who technically should not be able to fly who can learn Fly and use it. Β I found this out when training up a Dark-type team in my Y-game and I taught the move to a Vulaby for the sake of convenience (also, I do like the move). I seem to remember that according to its pokedex entries, Vulaby "is not able to fly" because it is a baby bird (a young vulture) with tiny wings, a fat body, and either an eggshell or bits of something's skull as a diaper weighing it down. Β
My darn Vulaby flew me all over Kalos! Β (Eventually, she evolved into a Mandibuzz, in which flight makes sense). Β
