I have many WIPs lying around and most of them are still sketches, and this is one of them.

I haven't drawn PY in a very long while. In fact, this is the last time I ever drew him. How old is this you may wonder? Well, believe it or not it is one year and four months old. The sketch was created in January 16th of 2011! Gosh, this is old indeed!

Anyway...

I found that I really need to improve my coloring and effects skills. Currently, they are two different things in a sense. Generally, no matter how I pain I can still do the effects the same way, but they are too simple and cheat. I wrote a journal about my issues with coloring and effects so I'm not talking about that here.

I found what might be the beginning of my salvation. A new method for painting/coloring that saves me a LOT of time and layers. Not only that but gives me a better looking image. Alone this new method still can't, at this point, fulfill my artistic needs all because I am still stuck with linearts. Well, one problem at time... linearts aren't too bad and I can still use them for a little longer. What I most need at first is coloring and effects and since the effects depend mostly on the coloring, better start by the beginning.

So what I did was make a pure black lineart over the sketch on CorelDraw (which can give me a high definition/resolution product once exported) and keep the background transparent. Then I imported the PNG into Photoshop and started working on it with masks. These allowed me to color the entire body in a minute without the need to worry about letting colors get past what they shouldn't. After I got the characters fully colored with very fewer layers than with the old method and much sharper lines, I used a tool that I didn't know existed and could color the black lineart right away without the need for any extra layer or anything. And they came out perfectly!

So yes, this is all testing for now. I am getting used to this new coloring method before trying the effects department. My amazing friend ~pokeinuyasha sent me some very useful hints and tutorials on the coloring and effects department but the results they grant are a bit advanced for me to follow at the moment. I will use them and I will get to that, but at first hand, my greater need is to solve the base colors/flat colors vs. linearts issue, so I'm starting by here. Once I get used to this I will care about effects. Mostly because those tutorials handle both things at the same time. Before merging both departments into one, I'd better improve on both alone first.

So yes, please tell me what do you think of this. It's not finished, though! Lacks a fan on PY's right hand and of course, the effects.

P.S: Before you ask, this is inspired on myself and one particular thing I use to do on Smash Brothers Brawl/Melee.

This might be moved to Scraps soon.

Thank you! ^^ I might be making a couple more coloring on two other sketches to practice a little more as a separate project then try effects.

May I suggest you put less watermarks on your artwork? They distract from the actual artwork a lot. I can't help but look at them when I wanna see your character. I think the watermark in the middle is enough, just put it on the bottom over his feet.

Hmm... I'll ponder about that.
