His signature move (along with the Nara clan's) is the Shadow Possession/Paralysis Jutsu. It allows him to make use of shadows around him generated by objects and sources of light.

His preferred weapon is the Ninja Yo-yo. The string and the yo-yo itself is advantageous to him because he can manipulate it's shadows to subdue his opponents.

He's a very intelligent strategist in the battlefield but naturally, he's much of a slacker.

Shikamaru is somewhat a bit of a sexist or a misogynist. He doesn't like fighting with kunoichi (female ninjas) as he deemed them "annoying". After he was saved by Temari of the Sand Village (who eventually become his wife), he started to slowly treat girls fairly like men especially towards his teammate Ino Yamanaka.

What you might see here is that he's playing with a lighter. That lighter belonged to his deceased mentor of Team 10, Asuma Sarutobi, the uncle of Konohamaru. Shikamaru kept the lighter as a memento of his mentor who was killed at the hands of the dreaded, foul-mouthed, arrogant and the immortal Hidan of the Akatsuki. The lighter was used to blow up Hidan to pieces after falling to Shikamaru's trap and then burying him alive as an act of vengeance for Asuma's death.

Judging by the lighter that belonged to Asuma as he's a heavy smoker, Shikamaru in the manga becomes a smoker as he picked up his deceased mentor's bad habit of smoking. In the anime, Shikamaru does not smoke at all but he does so during Kakashi's reign as Hokage but he's being scolded for doing that.

His favorite board games are Shogi and Go, the games that made him a master strategist.
