Why are those "zombies" called creatures you ask? Well, technically they are NOT zombies because according to The House of the Dead franchise director Takashi Oda, during production of the game revolving zombies, he described the term zombie as "trite", meaning: overused or unoriginal. They are created through experimentation of Human, Plant and Animal DNA (in The House of the Splatted, they are created through DNA experimentation of cephalopod, marine flora and other marine life) and then subsequently cloned rather than being undead. Despite this, when a inkling/octoling victim was killed by a creature, there may be chances that corpses will reanimate into the undead after a certain period of time.

The lore behind the creatures' creation is that the biochemist and geneticist Dr. Curien, the head of the DBR Corporation is obsessed in discovering the true nature of life and death while desperately tring to cure his terminally ill son Daniel while being funded by his financier and genome theory expert Caleb Goldman. He created genes that can cure Daniel along with the others used to create the Magician and the Wheel of Fate. With Daniel was cured and on the process of recovery, Curien's experiments took a gruesome turn as the scientist himself was on a brink of insanity, thus unleashing the creatures upon his research staff in hopes of destroying mankind (squid or octo-kind).

Boss creatures are named after Tarot cards of the Major Arcana (except for the Wheel of Fate which is based on the "Wheel of Fortune").

The corpses around are DBR Researchers that are killed during the rampage of the creatures unleashed by Curien.

On the left side (right hand side of a creature in the middle), a creature holding dual axes and wearing a torn polo shirt is based on Cyril. Cyril also appears as one of the game character cameos in the Disney movie "Wreck-it Ralph" and was erroneously named "Zombie".
