**EDIT**I made this for a tutorial book called Zen of Zbrush. The book has been released I am happy to say!
The digital version is here ([link] ) <--I recommend this one
And the physical version is here: ([link] )
The book has 140 pages and completely goes over creating characters in Zbrush. It also has 3 hours of video tutorials illustrating the techniques better.
**/EDIT**
Hey guys,
So I had to pause work on the low poly of my elite, because I was lucky enough to be a part of a ZBrush book with Vitaly Bulgarov and Vik Sorensangbam. It's a tutorial book that will be called Zen of ZBrush. Each of us will walk you through our technique and work-flow for creating characters in ZBrush.
I will be walking you through how I created this character. It's a scouting drone I just named Drone-04. Some of you may have previewed this model before this, as I posted images in my sketchbook. I wanted to create a mech that had visual characteristics similar to the Eva Mechs of Evangelion.
The reason I submit stuff to my scrapbook before it's done is because I don't want to spam people's deviantWatch with half done work. I get that a lot from my subscriptions and it's tedious to weed out all the half done stuff.
I will low poly this for my portfolio but that will not be covered in the book. The book only covers the model in ZBrush. Speaking of which this model was fully made in zbrush. I started using ZSketch then went on from there.
I think I covered everything. Take care and I hope you enjoy
Also, cause I know this will get asked, the total mesh is 52.7 million polygons. This may sound like overkill but the mesh can stand to be printed at wall poster size and still hold up.
Edit: DAILY DEVIATION! Wow thank you so much to Butch007 (james bond

hey dude thanks! I used zsketch for the base mesh then used the clay tubes brush to create forms. After that I used the hPolish brush to make everything smooth and clean

aah.. what a pity...
but can you explain how to create a skin-map for a model in zbrush.. and how i know where which part will be?
or is it a must do.. to make all the texturing in z-brush.. cause i personally think this kinda sucks.. if you want to add a grungy look or scratches

AMazing work, I have already seen it at ZBrush Gallery, I really like the design of the character, Would like to see it textured and rendered in some scene.Congrats for the book! Did you use Zbrush R3.5?

awesome work. faved. I'm a student animator with a very big interest in 3D animation. I have access to Z Brush but have never really used it much although I admire the works produced using it.
I have a question regarding your drone model. Would a model like this be "animate-able" or is it better to create a basic model it in maya or other software first and then import in Z Brush, add details and take it back into maya? (hope my question makes sense, lol).

MikeJensen In reply to darksorasan [2010-02-22 20:46:30 +0000 UTC]
Hey dude no problem. I don't think this specific model is animatable very much right now. I still have to fix a few things in order for it to appear to be functionally able to deform. Although that's not to say that you have to start in maya. Either way is fine, but I prefer to start in zbrush. But if you do start in zbrush then you will eventually have to retopologise the model so it will deform correctly. Hope that makes sense

thanks for the reply.
A take it retopologise means making sure all the subdivs, edge loops are corrected such as the joints for the character having extra divisions.
congrats on the DD too.

Is this pure Z-Brush? Awesome how you did all the details.
Looks very organic and clearly machine-like at the same time without the usual over-textured parts I see in a lot of Z-Brush work.

MikeJensen In reply to shadow-link [2010-02-22 20:43:12 +0000 UTC]
Thank you very much! It is pure Zbrush with the exception of using max to import a few primitives. Thanks a ton for the kind words
