such a powerful photo... many see hope for humanity and a side we don't often see, but the people in the photo are most certainly 'sad', in a rush, and desperate/hopeless.

Great photo, but...

I guess this is situational. If there were children in the vehicle, I would understand. Other than that, I wouldn't jump into floodwater to save someone dumb enough to try and cross a flooded low water crossing. It shows they have little value for their own life and the lives of the teams which must then rescue them-sometimes at the expense of their own lives.

It could just be that I live in right in the heart of flash flood alley and have become desensitized to this sort of thing. A lot of effort is made to educate the public. Have you ever heard, "Turn around, don't drown?" But people still do it. This gives me little faith in humanity.

What it should foster is not little faith in humanity but GREAT faith in stupidity. Naturally people make stupid mistakes but how are we to know that those people tried to wade across. I live in Florida in a flood zone and when the last hurricane came in the whole place got destroyed and everyone helped each other out in my community to help clean everything up.

You say you wouldn't help someone in need... because you were too concerned about yourself or because they were stupid? How sad that makes me. People make stupid mistakes. If you were in that car I'd imagine your attitude and opinion would change instantly.

Of course your not going to throw yourself into the river alone and try to swim to the car by your lonesome-- that's why you see several MEN who link arms and hands and anchor each other in and secure themselves so that they DON'T get hurt.

Of course I respect that that is how you feel... but that doesn't mean I have to respect you. You say people who do that sort of thing are uneducated and that they give you little faith in humanity... but I say people like you give me little faith-- which is what makes this picture so beautiful and so wonderful-- because it's filled with people who AREN'T like you.

I hope you never need help and look into the eyes of someone like yourself who will not help you in your time of need. That would be too cruel. But I'd hate to be the person in need if you were the only person standing around.

Naturally, I can't exactly tell what is going on it the photograph so I stated what I thought was going on and shared my thoughts on such events. Of course my opinion taken out of context is going to make little sense. I am only talking about people who cross flooded low water crossings in my area. That's it.

"You say people who do that sort of thing are uneducated"

Actually, I have stated the opposite. They are educated and they still do it. People even drive around police barricades into the water! There are even laws against making these crossings. That's one of the reasons I'm disgusted. If they weren't educated, how could I blame them?

"Of course your not going to throw yourself into the river alone and try to swim to the car by your lonesome-- that's why you see several MEN who link arms and hands and anchor each other in and secure themselves so that they DON'T get hurt."

You are seriously underestimating the power of water if you think this is safe. Sure they may have succeeded this time, but people have died attempting such rescues. I have already said that it is their decision to go in after the victim, but I wish they didn't have to make that choice.

it's your decision and we have to respect it. but people still need to save each other, because other than that who would do it for us?

CaffeineInhaler In reply to Mikeleus [2009-07-18 14:03:01 +0000 UTC]

It is rarely that simple. This is also applying one basic principal to the whole spectrum of situations. Add just one passenger, from grandma to a child, and I'd agree to being a link in the human rescue chain. Everything is situational. Change just one fact, and you have reassess your values and possible actions.

but not drown

But at what risk? What is stopping a loose tree trunk from knocking all of those people downstream? Also, I don't see the difference in getting hurt vs. drowning. You still wish ill of people.

I'm just saying that I wouldn't do it. If someone else wants to risk their life, than let them. But no matter what, I will still be disgusted with people who are thoroughly warned of the dangers, ignore them, and put the lives of individuals who would help them at serious risk. People who cross flooded low water crossings know that if they screw up, people will come to aide them. They might underestimate the power of water and figure this the likelihood of such event low, yet they still accept it. Thus many knowingly put others in danger. How will getting hurt inform them otherwise? In some cases, seeing others getting injured (or more likely in this situation- dieing) at your expense might be a lesson, but at what cost? Is it worth it?
