This would be an interesting Sonic redesign; since his 30th birthday is around the corner now. ( ; if you ever check this image out, think about it).
It also gives him a more mature and experienced attitude; while keeping his energetic and carefree personality... and those shoes; my GOD the shoes.
They give a hint that Sonic's power has grown immensely, to the point that his current shoes were no longer enough to withstand the highly increased friction he would create. Luckily, Tails would had already worked in a newer version of said sneakers (the ones shown here); which were now indestructible and able to withstand even beyond lightspeed.
