Description
April Showers, May FlowersThere wasn’t much to do here, you thought with a sigh as you shifted dramatically on the hood of the impala, after having spent a few minutes picking the few flowers that managed to grow in the cracks of the sidewalks and placing them in your pocket. Sam said that he and Dean had to go into the building across the way and play FBI with the nice people there. You’d asked if you could tag along this time, after all that game always sounded like so much fun. But, as always, Dean had been quick to forbid from joining in on such pastimes. So here you were bored and most impatient as was Curt, who had to remain inside your jacket pocket whenever you were all outside.
“Sam is a non-truthteller, Curt. He said Iowa was going to more fun than Ohio,” you complain before throwing your hands up into the air, “It’s just as boring here as it was in Ohio!”
Curt shifts a bit in your pocket before peeking outside the flap of the pocket. He trills somewhat delightedly as he looks up to your face and you offer him a small smile in return. You pat him lightly on his head before turning your attention back to the building Sam and Dean went into about ten minutes ago. Waiting wasn’t always so bad, especially when you had Castiel to keep you company, but lately the angel seemed to be quite swamped with his heavenly obligations and you could never work up the courage to demand any more of his attention.
With Castiel absent you’d turn to seek out Sam’s attention, but then this new case cropped up and you’d all been on the road for the past week or so. A few days ago Sam and Dean had gotten into a bit of a spat and the car rides had then been driven in silence. When you’d all stopped to rest at whatever motel happened to be on the way, both brothers still refused to speak to one another. How in the world were they supposed to play FBI if they couldn’t even stand to be in the same room? If only Bobby were here. Bobby always knew how to knock some sense into those Winchester.
But Bobby wasn’t here and Cas wasn’t at your leisure to aid you either. It was just you and Curt. What in the world were you and little Curt supposed to do? Maybe if you cried a little…
“(Name)!”
The sound of Sam’s voice urges you from the depths of your mind and eagerly you hop off the hood the impala to dash into his awaiting arms.
“You didn’t start any trouble did ya, kid?” Dean teases as you all made your way over towards the impala.
You stick your tongue out at him and with a chuckle he disappears into the driver’s seat. Sam opts to sit in the back with you allowing you, after you buckled in appropriately, to snuggle in close into his large body.
“So did you guys win the game?” you asked, bright eyes peering up at Sam expectantly.
Sam chuckles lightly, lifting a hand to lay down any fly-aways in your hair, before replying, “Yeah. I think so.”
You frown with the wrinkle of your small nose before turning your eyes to peer at Dean through the rearview window, “You think? What kind of game doesn’t have a winner?”
Dean offers you a small smile, but there’s something ominously bitter about it, “The huntin’ game, kid.”
Sam and Dean had been very adamant about not leaving you in the dark about supernatural beings, for your own safety of course. Still, no matter how hard you tried, there were just some things you simply couldn’t quite grasp. It’s been quite some time since you were first attacked and you can hardly remember the occurrence, if at all. It was all a blur. You’d remembered nothing and then suddenly there was Lyssa. Then Lyssa went away and you’d found Dean, Castiel, Sam, and Curt. And you simply couldn’t remember life before and without them—both figuratively and literally. The brothers didn’t speak often about the ghoul that killed Lyssa and it never really occurred to you to ask. You were perfectly content here in the care of the constantly squabbling brothers with an angel and a small shifter-like creature.
“Why do you hunt if you both don’t like it?”
The silence is the most tense of all the silences you’ve seen the Winchesters endure.
“Because we have to,” is Sam’s gentle response and your offer him a small frown.
“Adults say that a lot. So sometimes things just have to be done?” you ask them both though your eyes are on Dean’s which are gazing at your through the rearview mirror.
With a sigh Dean twists in his seat to offer you his full attention, “Exactly.”
In response your frown deepens and you shake your head, “I don’t think so.”
Sam looks curiously to his brother, but Dean opts to remain silent. So Sam then turns his eyes back to you.
“Well what do you think?”
“Maybe at first. At first it seems like there’s no real reason, but there’s always a reason. You just don’t know yet.”
“Why do you think that?”
“Lyssa used to say that. She said she was supposed to find me and that she would eventually have to give me to the person whom I was supposed to be with. I didn’t get it at first, but I do now. I was supposed to meet you two and Curt and Cas and Bobby. I just didn’t know it yet, but I do now.”
Sam has no words for what you’ve just said. You hadn’t mentioned Lyssa since the day they found you and now, here you were, spewing words of wisdom as though it were common sense.
“So you think Sam and I just haven’t found our reason yet?”
You shake your head with a small smile before shifting to the right to open your pocket and draw out the flowers you’d picked earlier from your pocket. Curt exits your pocket, flowers held within his mouth before he drops them into your awaiting palm.
“It goes like this. Summer is super hot and it makes it hard to think. Fall is lonely and everything changes. Winter is cold and everything dies so it makes it hard to believe. But spring washes all the bad things away and brings all the pretty flowers!”
You move to place a flower into both Dean’s and Sam’s hand with a pleasant smile.
“You both just haven’t gotten to spring yet. You just have to be strong and wait.”
Neither brother says anything for what seems like an eternity, but the quiet isn’t unbearable. Instead there’s something peaceful about it, as though a realization has washed over everyone. On the way back to the motel you all stop by a diner for burgers and a shake. Well Dean had pie, but you and Sam had shared a shake. The brothers made pleasant conversation the entire stay and you’d felt the world had righted itself once again.
Later that night as you rested peacefully with Curt cuddled close in your arms—both surrounded by all the pillows you’d stolen from both beds as well as the one stowed away in closet—Castiel would arrive and Dean and Sam would greet him with congenial smiles. Castiel would then proceed to inquire as to what had gotten both in such a ‘heavenly moods.’ Dean would merely chuckle and smirk as he’d turn his attention back to newspaper in his hand and Sam would look to Castiel over the top of his laptop and smile before replying.
“We’re just waiting for spring, is all.”
Castiel would not pursue any further explanation as he sits down on the edge of the bed you were sleeping on. The peaceful ambience in the room and the calm aura emanating from both Winchesters said all that needed to be said.

Oh? I've actually only been to Ohio (I went for Cedar Point), but a friend of mine used to live in Iowa. He never seemed all that impressed by it either.
Aww! Thank you!
