Description
Imagery suggsted by a tree trunk in a car park. This particular version suggests the character of "Bottom" from Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" who turned into a donkey. Also a hint of Don Quixote in the lower sketch reminiscent to me of paintings by Daumier.I saw a doucumentary years ago with illustrator Alan Lee (of Lord of the Rings fame) exploring the countryside and sketching old tree roots for inspiration. Despite being unable to track the documentary down (does anyone else remember it?) ...it stayed with me and made a strong impression. More than ever, I regret spending so many years as a librarian instead of confidently pursuing a career as an artist illustrator. Then again, I know why... I wanted a stable, steady, modest income and to feel that I was helping people on a day to day basis without indulging my ego.
I'm now in my 50's, more secure, the clock is ticking (life is short) and I'm beginning to think of getting back into the art more seriously again, hoping to make connections and find opportunities.
If we shadows have offended,
Think but this, and all is mended,
That you have but slumbered here
While these visions did appear.
(Puck, Act 5 Scene 1)
