Description
Erta Ale is an extensive shield volcano located in Ethiopia, in the Afar region, close to the border with Eritrea and also the most active in the country. The volcano is so extensive that it has its own mountain range (of the same name), in addition to containing low stratovolcanoes that are part of the Erta Ale mountain range. The Erta Ale volcano contains an active lava lake in its crater and continuous eruptions have been occurring since 1967.
