If two galaxies collide head-on, they are likely to be torn apart. The stars and gas in the galaxies will be scattered, and the galaxies will eventually reform into new galaxies. However, if the galaxies collide at a glancing angle, they may merge to form a new galaxy. The new galaxy will be larger than either of the original galaxies, and it will have a different shape and composition.
