Description
I got a lot of positive feedback about the last step-by-step image that I submitted, so I've made another. Hopefully this also eliminates any doubt that my work is traced or a paintover.Photoshop 6.0. Wacom. Airbrush (default round hard edge brushes) and eraser only. I think its easier to paint without the smude tool, dodge or burn. No tracing, paintovers, or filters.
Finished painting: [link]
Thanks to Satyrgirl [link] for allowing me to use her IvyLady shot as a photo-ref. The photo is here: [link]
steps:
1-3: the sketch, and different adjustments that I tried. Drawn from photo-ref with no tracing. 1pixel brush, 100% opacity in a single layer.
4: Basic colors and shading
5-6: Building up skintones with shading and highlights
7: Shading and highlights for nose and mouth
8: Starting the detail work on the facial features
9: Basic highlights in hair
10: Suggesting major chunks of hair
11: Adding more contrast to suggest smaller strands
12: Adding single hairs

I love to find deviants who share in their developmental precesses. Great work on this and your other walkthrough. I've done a few of my own, and have seen great response. You are part of what makes DA worth paying for, and you are going on my watch list.

This is fantastic. Yes that is the problem with doing photorealism on the computer. People just think you just painted over a photo. Good way of showing that is not the case. Plus it is really cool to look at your technique.
