I looked at a lot of horse refs for the pose. A lottt. XD I never really drew a horse like that so I had to look everywhere.

Awww thanks! It just takes a lot of practice, really.
I got my textures from around dA and cgtextures! If you have Photoshop, you should put the texture you want on top of all your layers and put the layer mode to "Overlay". That usually does the trick.

I don't know where I got this texture, I think it's a custom blend of a few of them, but here is a similar texture to start out with:

the colors are lovely, especially the background! it looks like the horse's front and rear legs are different lengths though, and they're not proportioned exactly right...and they're a little too thin for a draft horse. but, overall, great job with the anatomical structure!

Yeah, you are totally right about the legs. It does look too thin to support his weight! I will have to keep that in mind the next time I draw a horse. <3

I used Photoshop CS5 for this drawing but to tell you the truth, software doesn't really matter. I use Photoshop because I like all the tools they give you but for some people it may be way too much. You should find a program that you are most comfortable with and roll with that. <3

Well...textures really help. XD Since watercolor paper is textured, watercolor drawings also look slightly textured. THAT IS HOW I CHEAT. XD Also, looser strokes with shading and looser line work also add to the watercolor feel of things. You can try that out.
