Description WARNING: HUMONGOUS FILE!

My first tutorial ever Q U Q
I'm sorry, I'm a horrible teacher OTL

But please enjoy <3
Ask questions if you want, and I'll do my best to answer them!

It was supposed to be longer, but my computer ran out of RAM space and the scratch disks were full, so I couldn't resize the canvas to make it bigger orz.

So, I worked on this throughout class time (ICT 9/10), since I finished all my assignments super early. I barely have any more time at home, busy with homework ;A;

Not sure what to say here LOL
But I'm so tired and I should get some more sleep

I hope I can get a Part II out soon, but no guarantees.
Part 2 will probably be about drawing/shading, as my watchers wanted.

Oh yeah, this was made for:

EDIT: OMG A DD! ;A;
Never would have thought!
Thank you so much to ^MzzAzn for suggesting, and ^shelldevil for featuring it! Thank you so much!

Oh I didn't know someone else mentioned it already ^^" sorry >.<"

Well yes you normally use fonts like that only for pointing something out so like for the thank you on the right lower corner but text which should be readable should be either in a font with serifes or without (I guess for a tutorial a font without serifes is better) but easy to read. *just wanted to add some additional information for your personal referance*

You are so welcome!!

Wow. That's super helpful! Too bad I can't use it. Curse you Photoshop Elements 8!!! It has no blur tool.

miru-kai In reply to EpiCookies [2011-10-12 19:11:19 +0000 UTC]

Ah yeah, sai tools have completely different effects from Photoshop.
I think Photoshop has a blur, but it doesn't have the same effects as SAI.

And thank you >u<

Although I'm quite familiar with both Photoshop and Sai programs, what gives me the greater aesthetic edge as an aspiring comic artist? I am aware that designing graphics is Photoshop's game, but is Sai mainly about art?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

miru-kai In reply to DanraiJoaquin [2011-10-10 18:17:54 +0000 UTC]

Hm...
In my opinion, I believe that SAI is the better program for drawing, but Photoshop has the upper hand on textures or comic toning.

Sai is created as a painting software, but Photoshop was created as an image editor.

Sai was also designed to work conjointly with Photoshop, as it has an option to export as a .psd file.

I'm sorry if that wasn't much help, as I've only been doing digital art for 3 months.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DanraiJoaquin In reply to miru-kai [2011-10-15 22:44:17 +0000 UTC]

So dual wielding both programs would help, given that the user has knowledge on said programs that is?

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

starltrubymoon In reply to DanraiJoaquin [2011-10-10 17:07:22 +0000 UTC]

SAI is generally used for coloured artworks and art that you want more of your own touch to, if you plan on screentoning anything, SAI doesnt have any options for this and also doesnt have any typesetting, whereas photoshop you can use for lines, screening, and typing. So if you plan on colouring, id use sai, if you plan on toning, id use PS =]

DanraiJoaquin In reply to starltrubymoon [2011-10-15 22:44:51 +0000 UTC]

Any examples of tones which you'd care to mention? I'm really curious.

A how to would be nice.

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

drowning4you In reply to starltrubymoon [2011-10-13 16:47:05 +0000 UTC]

its true that sai doesn't have the option to do screen toning but like adding new brushes you can add new textures to create a screen tone.

tho photoshop will always have the text over sai.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

starltrubymoon In reply to drowning4you [2011-10-14 23:28:12 +0000 UTC]

My brain doesnt work well enough to create brushes that look like tones! XD

The whole text thing dissapointed me a bit :<

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

drowning4you In reply to starltrubymoon [2011-10-15 00:42:33 +0000 UTC]

lol Ive had sai for 2 year-ishes. i just now started trying new brushes. it not easy.

yea the whole text thing disappoints me to.especially when the only program i had was paint for text. ((that was a pain in the ass.))

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

starltrubymoon In reply to drowning4you [2011-10-16 05:28:12 +0000 UTC]

I was using photoshop for about 2 years, and was a total veteran and didnt even wanna try anything else, then i saw a speedpaint of someones picture done in SAI, i got the trial and was totally hooked ;3;
Now i only use photoshop for backgrounds sometimes, and if i ever need text XD

omg ; -; i use this program i knew everything u said in there expect the one for the Fringe thing
i have a question for you there is this clipping thingy ik how to use tthat but what about the other two idk what those are for?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

miru-kai In reply to rosepetalzz [2011-10-08 05:30:09 +0000 UTC]

You mean preserve opacity and selection source?

Preserve opacity is almost the same as clip layer. Except if you paint something on (for example) Layer 1, then click Preserve Opacity on LAYER 1, then when you paint over it, it will only paint on the areas you painted before.

I'll probably explain this and clipping on the next tutorial.

I'm not quite sure about the selection source, I've only used SAI for 3 months now. I've never used it before, so can't help you there. Sorry

rosepetalzz In reply to miru-kai [2011-10-08 05:35:24 +0000 UTC]

nah its okay xD but thank you that helps but idk which one is opacity u see the thing is x.x my program is suppose to be in japanese but it shows in jibberish and i want it to be english but the english version will say expired x.x its terrible right now

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

miru-kai In reply to rosepetalzz [2011-10-08 05:36:34 +0000 UTC]

Ah I see.
The first one should be preserve opacity, then clip, then selection
At least, that's what's on mine.

AMG, RASHI, THIS IS A FREAKING LIFE-SAVER!!!!! What would I do without you??!!!

This is so helpful! It teaches the basics, not like how to color hair or skin, stuff I'm okay with, but like the scratch pad (I'd never even heard of that) and the colors palete, which I kinda figured it was for colors, but I couldn't find a way to put the color there. That was probably the best part of the whole tutorial for me. Also, the ink pen stuff was pretty good. I normally use pen tool for lineart, but I'll try ink pen now. C:

Also, I love how handwriting~ you know, if that isn't creepy at all. ; w ;

lol that's not my handwriting xD
it's actually a font, but I chose one that would look like my writing ohoho

it's cause I was too lazy to install my tablet driver into my laptop

You're welcome! It really is! I also think you explained pretty good. xD And the beginning with the "you can find cracked free ones online" and stuff was actually pretty funny. But it's true and it's kinda bad cuz teh company will loose money. D:

Oh haha, it's cool still then! Do you have a mac or pc?
