I loved that movie, they did a great job with everyone except Lucifer. (Great acting, but damn it, they should have made him cuter.) The actor playing Gabriel was perfect!

Tilda Swinton has played roles like this before and angels are supposed to be sexless, they can basically choose to one or the other whenever they want or a blend of the features of both. Tilda's popular for it because she's so versatile that even androgynous characters are not beyond her reach

Actually according to Bible Gabriel was so beautiful that he looked almost like a girl. So thats why he is like this in the movie.
I think that they should have used some male actor anyways. But the best movie angel ever though.
