I downloaded this but when I pulled it up in Paint the background was black, what do I do?

Did you just download and copy the image into Paint, or did you download and save, then open it up in Paint?
Downloading and saving it will prevent the transparency from turning black, it will turn it white instead. But if you just copy the downloaded image and paste it into Paint, it turns it black. It does this with SAI and I'm pretty sure it does it with Photoshop as well, but it could just be my own copy of PS.

Saving it somewhere and then opening it in Paint would work best for you.
But I do suggest GIMP, it's similar to Photoshop, but free. Granted, it's a lot more complicated than Paint, but that's only because of how much more it can do. :3

I FIGURED IT OUT!
You simply download it, then when the page pops up, you scroll to a certain area, print screen, paste onto Microsoft Paint, and use the select tool to past it on another paint box! It's complicated, I know, but it's ALOT easier, believe me!

They work pretty well in MS Paint, actually. If you just touch up a few areas with the pencil tool, it should be okay! I did a couple with it, so if it's not working for you, I'm not sure what's wrong o:
