Berkly walked happily through Aqtuqtuaq Forest, his eyes looking at all the beautiful scenery, and the mountains he could see off in the distance. He was making his way down the hill to the river to retrieve some water for himself and Koda, who was still currently sleeping. The sun had only recently made its rise over the tall mountains. He was enjoying the cool, but not too cold morning. With a light breeze carrying over the forest, a rustling sound echoed throughout. Birds were chirping, singing their praise to the sun and swooping down to the grass below, looking for their first meal of the day. It was one of Berkly’s favorite things to go out with Koda, his most loyal companion. He was a gentle soul, and showed Berkly how to just relax and love the simple things. It was this attitude that allowed Berkly to relax more than usual and smell the flowers when out and about. Koda was a poor hunter, but a great travel companion.
They would likely go hunting at the lake later for more food, but for now, all they needed was water. Berkly held the bucket in his hand and eventually found himself at the mouth of the lake. He dunked the bucket into the water and satisfied with the clear liquid filling the metal container, he made his way back up the hill to their base camp. The one thing that Berkly didn’t know, was that behind him two bears and seen him walking to the lake, and waited for him amongst heavily brushed trees. Watching the sky and ground as he walked, he wasn’t paying enough attention, and before he knew it, a roar came from his left, then his right. Snapping his head, he looked both directions. The bear to his left was a deep brown and had glowing yellow eyes, his teeth bore at Berkly. The bear to his right was a lighter brown cream color. Koda was sound asleep at their base camp, no idea any of this was going on.
Berkly didn’t know what to do, he couldn’t very well outrun these bears, and the brown and golden eyes were looking him up and down like he was definitely going to be dinner. What was he going to do? He looked around, there was a tree he might be able to climb to buy himself some time. He darted towards it, not knowing what else to do; these bears weren’t going to let him get away. He tried to quickly climb but the bears were behind him quicker than he expected. He used his claws on his hands to dig into the bark of the tree and help pull him up slightly quicker, but his pant leg was caught by the brown bear’s claws. “Koda!” Berkly’s voice called out loudly into the woods. The sound reverberated against the trees moving towards where Koda lay sleeping. It was faint, but it stirred Koda in his sleep. “Koda, help!” The second cry was louder and Koda shot up, looking around. Suddenly he was breathing heavy; was it a dream, or was Berkly really calling for him?
He didn’t test it, he ran towards where he could smell his handler, and as he came closer and closer, he could smell bears and blood. This sent chills down his body, and he ran faster towards his handler. In the time it took to get to him, he could see his handlers body roll away from the brown bear as it smacked him in the face. He was covered in wounds and blood. This sent rage thundering through his veins, and he barreled down towards them sliding in between them and planting himself over Berkly who struggled to lift himself up as blood dripped off of him. Koda lowered his head and his fur stood on end, drool dripped from his teeth and lips as he snapped and snarled loudly at the two bears. His rage was only increased when Berkly coughed, blood pooling out of his mouth onto the green grass. The slashes on his throat were life threatening and Koda knew he had to do something about these bears and then get his handler to someone who could help him.
He lunged forward, going for the brown bear who continued to go close, swiping at Koda and roaring at him. His fangs dug into the thick flesh of the bear, causing the animal to cry out. Koda thrashed his head from side to side, increasing the damage dealt to the bear. But the light cream brown bear went for Berkly while Koda was preoccupied. Noticing at the last second, Koda let go of the brown bear and slammed himself into the cream one. This allowed the brown bear to bite into Koda’s hip, but no yelp came, just a louder snarl. He was done playing, he grabbed the cream bear now, slamming it to the ground, his hind leg kicking the darker of the bears in the face, keeping them as far from Berkly as possible. His teeth tore a chunk of flesh from the cream bear and then went for the brown one, biting down on its paw and crushing all the bones in it. It was obvious to these two bears they weren’t going to make it out alive if they continued, so as Koda stood panting, his teeth showing as blood dripped from his mouth, they turned tail and ran.
Quickly Koda pulled Berkly onto his back and took off for the nearest town. It had been an enjoyable weekend until this point, and Koda was nothing but afraid of losing Berkly. He ignored the pain in his hip as he ran, not even going back to the camp, he just needed to take care of his handler, and that meant doing whatever he had to do. It took a while, and he had to slow down sometimes because Berkly didn’t have the energy to hold onto Koda, but finally he found himself running into a town. He wasn’t human, so he couldn’t speak, he just went up to the first person he saw that didn’t look fearful of him and bent down, showing them Berkly. Thankfully after the human yelled others came around and quickly led Koda to a place where they took Berkly inside. He stared at the doors before him, waiting for his handler to come out. He would do anything for this handler, and this was a day Berkly would never forget. How could he after his boy had been such a great defender of him?
