Description
A young woman walks the streets of Chicago at night. A fleeting glance at her might lead you to assume she is one of the city's lost souls, fleeting and without purpose. A closer look might tell you something else. The outline of a holstered gun. Facial scars betraying a history of violence. While this woman might call Chicago her home, her presence in it is indeed fleeting. Her purpose, however, she finds on the table of her apartment. A folder. Inside, a face, a plane ticket, and a briefing.
No one knows much about The Freelancer, not even her real name. Her reputation in many circles is tantamount to an urban legend. She has no family to speak of and very, very few friends, among whom she'd consider Darcy, her handler for The Covenant.
The Covenant is an assassination ring that dates back to the 1920s, when it carried out hits primarily for the Sicilian and Jewish Mafias in Chicago. Its scope has since expanded, and today, The Covenant offers the services of its staff to individuals across the country, whether they be mob bosses, politicians, or a millionaire with a grudge to bear.
The Freelancer has proven to be a ruthless assassin who takes, perhaps, an unsettling amount of pleasure in her work. Her employers might consider these negative qualities in brasher, more impulsive employees, but The Freelancer has established herself as one of the most consistent and valuable contract killers working under The Covenant. She is methodical, creative, and highly skilled, with an almost 100% success rate, no matter how difficult the assignment. In fact, The Covenant frequently auctions off her services, with use of her time going to the highest bidder.
None of this matters much to The Freelancer, however. She doesn't do what she does for the money, although the money is good. She does it because it's the only thing she knows how to do, or rather, the only thing she cares about doing.
And ask anyone who's been unfortunate enough to cross paths with her: she is very good at what she does.
