Description

Name: Ansell Avez II

Race: Human

Caste: Lower class

Age: 30

Gender: Male

Marital status: Single and ready to scare off all potential mates

Faction: None

Language(s): Common, Sothosian, some conversational Yuelian

Occupation: Hunter, former mercenary

Family: Parents are living in different kingdoms, he has minimal contact with either of them these days and 0 siblings to care about

Personality: Ansell takes himself and his job pretty seriously. Those that don’t might end up with an arrow in their head. He can be easily mistaken for the quiet type, and it is most definitely a misjudgement, for when he does feel like he has something of value to say, he overshares like it’ll be his last words. He probably thinks that they will be too. Ansell is very level headed, but that is mostly because if he does make an impulsive decision, he regrets it immediately. He handles stressful situations extremely well, showing little discomfort or vexation. In fact, mostly everything results in little more than an under the breath curse. Not a smiler. Really not smiley. He’s independent to a fault and his eccentric interests do not usually mesh well with others. This is also why he will fall on the quiet side. He was probably raised in a barn because his etiquette is pretty poor. Thankfully a lifetime of violent jobs has lead him to be fairly non-confrontational towards others he might offend. He distances himself from relationship opportunities quite often, failing to trust those with good intentions. Aside from that, he sugarcoats nothing and gives very underwhelming apologies for it. He’s tired and doing his best.

Height: 5’10”

Weight: 179 lbs

Appearance: Between his gloves, pants, and carefully crafted padded armor, what little brown skin available for show is remarkably untarnished by the scars he most definitely has. His long and somewhat uneven dark hair tends to be pulled back in a rather neatly kept braid, one of the few things that he puts a lot of time into the upkeep of. The bangs in the front are at that state where they aren’t quite long enough to stay in the bunch but still can drape over his fuzzy face. Always in some state of needing shaving, it’s clear that he’s either grown fond of the facial hair or just couldn’t be bothered anymore. He would probably look downright young and handsome if he cleaned up, but some people might find the scraggly look appealing anyway. He likes to wear a hat in town because it’s significantly less shady than a hood. Unlike the majority of archers, he lacks the lithe and frail body that is dependent on range for advantage. He probably couldn’t do a backflip if he tried, but he’s in good shape all the same; robust and just as dangerous up close as he is at a distance.

Weapons/Items:

  • Old Standard Crossbow for hunting

  • Recurve bow for battles

  • 60 arrows, mostly comprising of broadheads and bodkins; specifically however there is 1 with spiked hooks for a head that he may use to scale difficult places, two with a tip of poison not meant for human dosage, three silver tipped arrows

  • Four knives; one is a skinning knife while the rest are throwing knives

  • A small case with a Yuelian decorative motif; it contains a potpourri of different ground up herbs.

Hobbies: Hunting, hiking, crafting small charms and trinkets

Likes: Monster meat, milk, being outdoors, good craftsmanship, gambling, a challenge, also not having anything to do all day is just fine

Dislikes: Liars, jail, crowds, being rushed, prison, being touched, insects--particularly cicadas and crickets, jail, law officers

History:

Ansell’s father was a hunter of Praodan ancestry and his mother was Yuelian. He grew up with them in Sothos, also learning to become a hunter just like his father, but finer. He had a gift, sharper senses, which they both quickly assumed responsibility for honing and strengthening them to the best of their best ability. He quickly became a prodigious hunter, but was left without a family that supported him. His parents separated, and he spent a short time with his mother in Yueliang before returning to Sothos to continue hunting with his father. After years of differences in opinion, Ansell terminated his apprenticeship and went hunting on his own.

Reports of monsters plaguing the countryside offered an opportunity for lucrative business, but the longer he stayed in it, the less grotesque the monsters became, the more humanlike they were. Eventually or didn't matter if the reward was for humans or monsters, as long as it paid well enough to support his needs, it was fair game. Word of his bounty hunting spread to people, the kind of people who thought he could help as well. They just needed a competent escort for their caravans to and from Yueliang. He would be their man. They showed him ways to cope with the noise, with the distractions. The kingdom was full of healers like that after all.

Things went south when the authorities caught on to the trail of illegal operations. Given that the people Ansell was doing work for were actually part of a crime organization, the whole thing was on its way to being busted. He couldn’t save them or himself from that. They were captured and imprisoned for illegal trafficking, murder, fraud, larceny, and more. It was a no brainer. Not only did they decide to keep them locked up for several years, they would have them executed at the end of their indefinite term--whenever the kingdom was ready to make an example of them. When that day came, it was decided that they were to be executed soon as possible so the guard could move on to bigger problems.

The bigger problems moved onto them instead. On the day of their execution, a large chimera beast suddenly appeared in the middle of the city, destroying everything in its path. During the chaos, Ansell escaped, looted the nearby damaged shops, and stole a horse to flee the country. It was a long, long night of running and lying low from authorities who were warned of roaming convicts trying to cause trouble in the countryside, but worth it.

After things had settled down, after the chimera incident had passed, months of lying low in Sothos, the hunter found himself running with the wrong crowd again. The Crimson Dawn, offering to clear his name once they came to power, kept a tight leash on the hunter while sending him to track down and capture elemental spirits. He was almost solely responsible for their sudden disappearance from the area, but surprisingly he had no knowledge of their deaths following it. The only things he cared to participate in were the hunting of elementals and disposal of the organization’s enemies. After an enlightening encounter with a ranger, he turned on the group and once again went on the run, this time, hopefully, for the last time.

Goal: -finger guns-

Abilities:

Enhanced Sense
To make a long story short, his 5 senses are more or less superhuman.

His sense of smell and hearing is strong. Hearing extends to several yards away and low noises are still picked up at that distance. Even walls immediately surrounding him don’t work.

He can see very slight movement in objects without having to focus on them.
Vibrations are easily picked up.

In addition to having sharper senses, he can remember a sight, scent, sound, or touch for a long time once he's experienced it.

Therefore he is an excellent tracker, never gets lost, never needs to re-read maps, and details about a person or place's physical appearance are noted automatically.

This leads to certain skills in combat, such as:

  • If he skips a turn to line up a shot and is allowed to do so, it is a guaranteed hit on the following turn

  • Due to hearing and scent, perception is the same when in the dark or blinded

  • Half an enemy’s stealth/ambush roll

Cons: All of this backfires without medication or sedatives. When he is not in a secluded area, allowing his senses to run completely free is very uncomfortable. He would be restless, unable to think clearly, and very stressed out. A particularly bad episode of sensory overload will put him in shock or a period of torpor. Even if he is sedated, very loud and constant noises, bright light, strong scents can stun and debilitate if he is exposed to them.

Magic throws him off entirely because it doesn’t obey the laws of physics or nature. It doesn’t move in a way that he understands, he can’t smell it, and sometimes it doesn’t even make the same sound or a sound at all. While he may never be ambushed normally, any kind of teleportation will turn that upside down completely as well.
Magic will do 2x the damage if it hits him. Rip in rip.

Usually once a week he will need to sleep for an entire day to give his mind a break. Not getting to do so would result in drowsiness, worse reaction time, and headaches.

Hunter’s Knowledge

The only thing Ansell is pretty knowledgeable about--most things in and outside of the bestiary. Roll perception to identify a creature. The number rolled determines how many pieces of info, hints etc. that can help with combat and/or taming
