Kapuki has always been and always will be a charming lady. Bold and cunning, there is little that stands between her and whatever she desires; and even if there should be something to block her path, she will find a way around. Or perhaps she will give up and pursue an easier avenue of finding entertainment. There is little reason to waste energy and resources when she can find her fun elsewhere after all, right? This mentality has followed her since she was a teen exploring the lands with her family, she has always had an intense aversion to discomfort and actively pursues joy, pleasure and satisfaction in all avenues of her life. Sarcasm has also played an integral part in her development. Lacking any consistent sources of entertainment led to her taking up the habit of throwing jabs at her family, seeking comfort from others and making joke after joke.
But life is dangerous and she learned this quickly; in defense she started hiding herself from others by fabricating new aliases and telling white lies about her personal life. It never hurt anyone and it kept her heart tucked away in a little box, out of reach from those who would wish harm upon her. Kapuki also forged her intelligence and cunning into a deadly weapon, which she used on numerous occasions to get out of trouble or to haggle some extra food for her family. In the end, Kapuki ended up as a superficial creature who hides her intentions from others to such a degree that she can barely tell the difference anymore.

[ this character's history contains unsettling themes such as:
› death, famine and betrayal ]
[ there is a more in-depth history available in this character's extended bio ! ]
Kapuki was born into a small group of nomad hyenas that consisted of her mother, an uncle and her two brothers. The group would wander the lands in search of new places to explore and new people to meet which helped the cubs grow fond of others and perfect their social skills. Kapuki seemed to take to this lifestyle the most; she enjoyed all sorts of company and the stories that strangers often brought with them. Oftentimes, strangers would join the group for a short time for extra security until they reached their next stop before departing again and these were the best moments of Kapuki's life. It granted opportunities to peak into the lives and cultures of completely different people and offered many learning opportunities that she would have otherwise lacked.
This continued without issue for most of her life; it was peaceful, happy and adventurous. Until a leopard joined their band one day. At first he was charming and helpful, he endeared the group to him and became a part of the family especially since he traveled with the group for about a year. He had gained their wholehearted trust and adoration. Which is why no one expected him to turn on them. He attacked one night, immediately targeting Kapuki's uncle. The yelling woke the rest of the group, whom all stared in disbelief at the scene in front of them. Kapuki's mother sprung into action immediately, grabbing onto the leopard with all her might. The younglings, they hesitated to charge at this giant cat but when one of Kapuki's brothers leaped forward to join the fight, the rest eagerly joined. They won the fight, killing the leopard but the group had sustained heavy injuries. Kapuki's uncle sustained the worst damage, losing an eye and permanently crippling one of his legs. But no one had died and in the end they healed and adapted.
They moved on with their lives and wandered for a few more years before a terrible drought and famine struck the lands they had called home. With little choice, they headed towards a land both rich in prey and in water; the pridelands. And yet, somehow, news hadn't reached them of the King's death nor the fact that the pridelands were, in fact, in just as bad of a position as the land they had just fled from. They traveled day and night, stealing and scavenging whatever they could to survive, before reaching the pridelands and realizing that it had all been for nothing. Despite this, they tried to make the most of it. They found a new den and began scavenging and stealing once more to feed themselves. Kapuki would spend days away from the den, collecting whatever she could whether it be food, water or herbs.
But a famine does not care for the efforts of those it affects and so disaster struck when Kapuki's youngest brother, Ukombozi, became ill. He had suffered greatly under the famine and was nothing more than skin and bone by the time the sickness came, which of course, worsened it significantly. Kapuki stopped scavenging in order to care for her brother day and night, desperately using everything she could to keep his condition stable despite the pitying looks from her family. She refused to believe that her efforts bore no fruit and poured everything she had into making sure he survived.
It didn't work.
Ukombozi died not soon after and it tore at Kapuki's heart and mind. So deep was her sorrow that not even the comforts of her family could drag her back to the surface and so intense was her grief that even vultures found themselves pitying her. But sorrow does not last, not when your mind is your enemy, and soon her sorrow turned to anger and her anger found it's target in her family. She would snap at them whenever they tried to comfort her and spout hurtful words she didn't mean when they tried to reason with her. Their presence was suffocating and their care was maddening and so a few days after Ukombozi's burial, she left. Kapuki left and didn't look back. She just needed somewhere new, somewhere safe, somewhere she could leave this failure behind her.
