This is one of the most modern robots from Robot Wars I have drawn. Meet the series 10 and final Robot Wars Champion, Eruption! This bot was one of the up and coming robots that came on the scene when Robot Wars came back in 2016, but Eruption has been in combat way longer. The team consisted of a father-and-son team of Michael and Adrian Oates. Michael Oates was the team captain throughout all of Eruption's appearances and held the more prominent speaking role on television. A highly accomplished driver heading into the series, Michael Oates was the driver of Eruption in all of its battles, and is also credited with designing the robot. Michael Oates was also involved with building the robot, while Adrian Oates was the lead builder of the machine, creating it from scratch in 2012 and lead the repairs process during Eruption's televised appearances. Michael Oates was aged 17 in Series 8 and was still a schoolboy at the time, but as the reboot progressed, Michael Oates (aged 18 in Series 10) progressed to study Engineering at Durham University, while 52-year old Adrian Oates was a full-time electronics engineer at a research laboratory. Eruption was a two-wheel drive, wedge-shaped robot armed with a full-pressure flipper. It used its steeply-backed wedge to enable the robot to recoil backwards when flipping, which also allowed it to self-right easier. A pair of long plates, called 'flyers', lined Eruption's back end for stability when flipping, and red anti-spinner plates were welded onto the sides to offer it extra protection against spinning weapons. The robot's armor consisted of 4mm HARDOX wear-resistant steel shell, with 10mm high-density polyethylene impact absorbers on top, and an extra layer of 3.2mm wear-resistant steel on its front. Eruption used a custom built control circuit to fire the flipper, which allowed the team to alter the amount of CO2 it used for each flip, in the hope that it will never run out of CO2 mid-battle. Eruption uses custom-built 4:6:1 gearboxes driving its 2x150mm caster wheel, in front of its two-wheel drive setup powered by 750w Bosch GPA 750w motors. The flipper itself was activated by an independent punch ram, pushing the flipper upwards in combination with bungee cords attached to the front end of the weapon, softening the recoil of the weapon firing, while allowing the weapon to retract. In a span of 3 seasons Eruption gained a 18-5 win/loss record and became the 10th Wars UK Champion. Its 18 wins currently ties Dominator 2, Terrohurtz and Thor for 10th on the all time list. With Robot Wars off the air yet again, Eruption remains the defending series champion.
