While rejected today in favor of Hydrothermal Vents, for 80 years the most widely accepted Origin of Life theory was the Primordial Soup, which gave rise to the Miller–Urey experiment, still a valid demonstration of the formation of the earliest biological molecules.

Primordial Soup lacked the sustained energy input, along a thermal gradient, to catalyze formation of lipids and amino acids- conditions which were present at Hydrothermal Vents.
