yeah the novels only come out in Japan apparently, but some awesome people have translated the 358 novel and a few others. Also apparently the author of the novels is the one who came up with Xion. when they were planning 358/2, he had liked the replica program from Chain of memories, and suggested they explore that concept more. So, its thanks to him we got Xion. The authors note at the end of volume 3 says that Xion's hair is black because he wanted Nomura to create a black haired girl. Him being involved really shows in the novel when you read it, compared to the game the novel explains more and shows you what people are thinking. There are even some scenes that weren't in the game! For example, it shows the events of COM from Axels perspective and what he is thinking, and many secret meetings between Xemnas, Saix and the founding members.

Roxas and Xion indeed look cute together and since she looks like Kairi (at least to him) it also makes sense if Roxas was in love with her ^^
One reason for me to not support it in my fanfic was only that I had no idea how to bring Xion back without blowing up some minds ...
The other reason is, I like my OC Fenia and I like Roxas X'D
