Sarah swiveled in her chair to face the new arrival. "Are you an investor or a test subject?"

"A test subject. The company told me to meet you here." The person in the doorway replied, hesitant to move further into the lab.

"Come in hun, I need you to be in the room to test out my tools." Sarah said warmly. She leaned back in her chair casually now that she knew the visitor was unimportant.

They approached nervously. "What are you testing?"

Sarah showed them the bracer strapped to her left wrist. A ruby glowed in the housing on her forearm. "This is a shrinking bracer. In theory, it lets a person without magic cast a shrinking spell."

"In theory? What happens if it doesn't work?"

"Any number of things. Most likely it just does nothing, or shrinks something else entirely. Worst case? I'd say it shrinks just your skin and you end up shedding it like a snake." Sarah answered.

"That sounds unpleasant. I'm not so sure about this any more." The test-subject said.

"You've already been paid. Would you rather try your luck with me or the courts?"

The subject gulped audibly. "Umm... with you I suppose."

"Good, now stand still." Sarah pushed a button on the bracer and pointed her hand at the person. It hummed with energy, both magical and mechanical, before shooting a blast of magic at them. They began to shrink as planned.

"Another successful test. I wonder why it only works for me?" Sarah mused, writing something down in her notebook.

The tiny test subject took stock of their new view. It was dizzying. The small workshop looked like a stadium, one with a goddess in her throne at the center. "I hate to bother you, but can you change me back now?"

Sarah laughed at the question. "Do you know how much harder it is to grow things than shrink them? I can just barely get a hang of shrinking. You're not getting back to normal size."

"What? You can't do that! I don't want to be stuck like this!." They yelled indignantly.

"Oh you poor thing, you didn't read the fine print did you." Sarah laughed. "As per company contract, if the test renders you unfit to care for yourself I may claim ownership of you."

"So what? you just keep me as a pet now?" They yelled back. "That's no way to live!"

"No I don't need any more pets." Sarah extended a foot, hovering it over the tiny person. "I think I'll just squish you."
