Description
This meme/list is a tribute to one of my favorite entertainers and an overall terrific person. That person of course being the late great John Candy, for those who didn't grow up with him or aren't familiar with him at all...allow me to explain. This man was born on my favorite holiday - halloween, and he passed on the 4th of March 1994. He was more than just a lovable goofy overweight guy, he was a lovable person on and off-screen and he was simply one of the best. He's also one of my personal heroes and rolemodels, of course I know that he is gone so I don't have any desire to become him in real life or anything, I may have a couple of characters inspired by him but those are just characters I created. I used to get made fun of on here because I was a fan of his and I was even trolled by people who took the screencaps I did of John in his movies and made stupid macro memes out of them, which almost ruined the man for me. I didn't want to say one of my heroes being reduced to a meme that's made to insult me. And yes I did do several stories and photomanips of myself becoming John or his characters but those were just of my character and I admit most of those weren't very good. I did get a little too carried away RPing as one of my characters that was a monster version of him, but I learned from that mistake (I just wish the people who picked on me for it would have learned to understand what satire is). The John Candy transformation ones I did were all based on and inspired by stories I read on sites like Dimensions Online (most all weight-gain ones btw, that's one of my favorite types of transformations as well). To this day I watch his movies when I need a quick pick me up or when i'm feeling upset, and it is also a tradition of mine in addition to this. I've been wanting to make one of these lists exclusively for him for quite a long time now and since October is coming up soon...I think it's about time.- Buck Russell (Uncle Buck). This guy is the best uncle ever! Not only is he one hell of a chef. But also he's pretty handy with an electric powerdrill and is very protective of his kids. Also..best exploding car engine ever! I love the speech he gives when he's in the principal's office telling off that witch of a school principal. It's worth noting that the 'mole' joke was actually from this movie - but was later referenced/paid homage to in the third Austin Powers film.
- Dr Tongue (SCTV)
- Wink Wilkinson (Little Shop Of Horrors 1986)
- John Bourgignon (Going Berserk).
- Gus Polinski (Home Alone)
- Yosh Shmenge (SCTV)
- Augie Morosco (Once Upon A Crime)
- Danny Muldoon (Only The Lonely)
- Jack Chester (Summer Rental)
- Spike Nolan (Brewster's Millions).
- Chester "Chet" Ripley (Great Outdoors). What can I say...John Candy was awesome at playing fatherly roles? He was even a wonderful dad in real life too. I'm glad my friends introduced me to this movie, because without it - I would have never gotten to know about J.C or his movies in general. "Big bear, big bear chase...big bear chase me!".
- Harry the Man With The Snake On His Face (SCTV)
- Jack Gable (Delirious). When the Goosebumps movie was announced, I heard some people on a few sites say that they thought it was going to be exactly like this only with monsters, well...not exactly, while there is a typewriter in both movies, the plots are different - like for example in Delirious - Candy's character Jack was a writer for a popular soap opera who ends up getting involved in a car crash and waking up in the world of his own show. I feel this movie is underrated and I am also very proud of myself for discovering this movie.
- Irv Blitzer (Cool Runnings). My second favorite John Candy movie will always be Cool Runnings because it's not only a classic sports movie but it's also a very uplifting movie with a wonderful cast and a heartwarming message. Of course it was one of John Candy's last films before his untimely death, but that doesn't make it any less fun to watch. Even though Irv cheated, he knows that what he did was wrong and manages to stand up for the Jamaican team after they get dropped out, he also gives a very uplifting speech as well. If you haven't seen Cool Runnings, you should - it's a classic.
- Barfolomew/Barf (Spaceballs). Ever wanted a best friend who is also part pet? Well look no further. Because Barfolomew is the friend for you, an interesting mix of human and canine - he is his own best friend and he can be your best friend too. It's impossible not to love this character. Originally Candy was going to have an appliance on his face that gave him a more dog-like appearance but Mel Brooks decided that Candy's face was expressive enough on its own. Now if only someone would make an official plushie of this character.
- Wilbur (Rescuers Down Under). I love this guy, he's every bit as memorable as his brother Orville. Interesting both Wilbur and Orville are named after the famous Wright Brothers. Also interestingly, Candy was also going to be the voice of a talking turkey called Redfeather in the original draft of Pocahontas and had recorded his voice but it got scrapped after his passing and also scrapped because they thought making the animals talk would ruin the mood. Also it's interesting to note that Candy was one of the other actors that the role of the Genie in Aladdin was going to go to - I would have loved to see him voice the role, but you know I think Disney did wonderfully casting the late great Robin Williams in the part.
- Frank Dooley (Armed And Dangerous)
- Mayor Tommy Shanks (SCTV)
- Lasky (National Lampoon's Vacation)
- Den (Heavy Metal).
- Freddie Bauer (Splash). Although I am not a fan of Tom Hanks's more dramatic movies, I am however a fan of the more comedic movies he was in prior to doing the former, like for example Allen Bauer in Splash. I felt so bad for him, because he had terrible luck with women all his life and he's been looking all over for someone to love and when he does...well, she's a mermaid. But there's nothing wrong with Madison and Allen being a couple though, I think they were a very adorable pairing. Of course the other reason why I love Splash is because of Eugene Levy as Dr Kornbluth who is obsessed with proving mermaids are real (interestingly, this character is who Crocker from Fairly Oddparents is based on) and John Candy as Allen's lovable big bro Freddie. Freddie is indeed a terrific character who steals the show, and is the most amazing older sibling ever, granted he's a womanizer - but he can't help himself, as he puts it "if something works for me, I stick with it", which also applies to me as well.
- Dennis (Nothing But Trouble). I have mentioned countless times that I feel that Nothing But Trouble has been treated unfairly over the years and I still stand by that statement. Yeah, it's weird and bizarre but it's a horror/comedy hybrid for pete's sake with dark humor in it, it's supposed to be like that. I think that it didn't deserve to win and be nominated for Razzies because to me - it's NOT that bad at all, it's actually kind of underrated and unappreciated. I definitely stand by all that I have said about this movie. Also, John - as per usual, was wonderful. He was very charming as Dennis and I like how he turns good later on and goes on to be Renalda's boyfriend.
- Dewey "Ox" Oxberger (Stripes). As you know I have stated that John is one of my heroes and that is true to this very day, because he was one of those comedians you could not only be entertained by but also sympathize with. Just hearing his various friends talk about what a great guy was is enough to warm my heart and make it melt at the same time. And also...hearing about his struggle with his weight, and how his father died of a heart attack while he himself was at a very young age...very heartbreaking, just like what happened with Lisa Marie Presley and her father Elvis - she was only 9 years old when Elvis passed away and she called up Linda Thompson and told her "My daddy's dead"....that's equally as heartbreaking. Especially when you learn about what a wonderful dad Elvis was and everything. I think we can all relate to Ox, mainly because we all have struggled with our body image and with our weight from time to time like John Candy himself in real life. Candy had weighed about 300lbs his entire life and was always struggling with his weight...I think we can all sympathize with him there and as Ox as well. Interestingly, according to the book "Laughing On The Outside" it says that he didn't want to do the famous mud-wrestling scene because he felt it was degrading and made him feel like he was a "pig in the mud".
- Del Griffith (Planes, Trains and Automobiles). Out of all of his characters, this is his most tragic one. Although he's a very happy character who likes to share his wisdom with everybody and his happy-go-lucky attitude towards life, he's actually a very tragic soul. Because poor Del has no place to stay for the holidays and his wife passed away, he has no one to go home to on Thanksgiving. So it is very heartwarming at the end when Neal introduces him to his family and lets him spend the holidays with him. I also would be remiss if I forgot to mention the pony version of him that appeared in the MLP: Friendship Is Magic episode Hearthbreakers. And yes, it's true...J.C was a LOT like Del in real life too. Because he is the real article, what you see is what you get. Also it might interest you to know that Bing Bong from Inside Out was based on him.
- Burton Mercer (Blues Brothers)
- Tom Tuttle (Volunteers). Normally I hate it when a show or movie uses the brainwashing trope (with a few exceptions of course, mainly ones like Clockwork Orange or if it's done comedically), but when it's done in a humorous way like for example in the Big Wolf On Campus episode "Manchurian Werewolf" - it's actually pretty entertaining, especially in the case of this movie. The second collaboration with Tom Hanks and it's an underrated gem, if you haven't seen this movie, you should - it's quite enjoyable and as usual, Candy is great.
- Johnny LaRue (SCTV). Is there anything Johnny can't do? I highly doubt it. Because this is the man who can do it all, not only is he the producer and star of his own productions, but he's a jack of all trades too. He's even run for city council. He's a genuinely lovable guy despite being an alcoholic and a womanizer. And yet he's more fit to be president than Trumpty Dumpty ever will be - or Scare-illary Clinton for that matter. And who needs a wall when you have your own crane shot?
- Eldona (Nothing But Trouble).
