1. I've picked Shrek as the subject of my movie screenshot meme today because it was my very first movie obsession, of course followed by Jim Carrey's version of The Grinch. Heck..I STILL have several Shrek books and a Shrek mug I got from when the movie was released on VHS/DVD (I also have a grinch one as well). Now I have been a huge fan of the movie even before the whole Shrek Is Life thing started and I am a casual Shrek fan although I have come up with a monster-girl character inspired by the Shrek Is Life meme and also came up with two TF stories inspired by the movie, I did one about a guy being TGed into an ogress and I did one about two brothers being TFed into Shrek and Farquaad respectively. I swear that I almost drove some of my friends insane with my obsession for this movie and the live action Grinch movie.2. Now I LOVE all of the characters in this movie, Shrek and Donkey included as they are both funny, not to mention Fiona who may have been the first monster-girl I ever laid my eyes on. And I know this sounds wrong...please don't flame me brogres, but I...I..I love Farquaad the most. I know he's an asshole, but how can I not like him? Given how many similarities to The Princess Bride this movie has, i'm probably not the only one who thinks Farquaad - or Farqui as I call him is similar to Prince Humperdinck...I think of him as sort of a mix of Humperdinck and Vizzini. I feel kind of embarrassed and ashamed to admit that I like him though considering in most Shrek Is Life stories i've read/heard - 'Farquaad' is used as a term to describe someone who doesn't believe in Shrek or just hates Shrek in general, but now that i'm bringing it up...i'm not ashamed of it anymore.
3. He's such a hillarious villain, and he was one of the very first animated villains I was obsessed with. Actually my first animated villain obsession was Lawrence Limburger from the original Biker Mice From Mars series (I even wanted the action figure of him but sadly couldn't get him at the time, I actually DO have Limburger in my collection now), then Rasputin from Anastasia (I'd be lying if I said that I only listened to In The Dark Of The Night once since that song is my personal favorite of all villain songs) and then after that Gaston from Beauty And The Beast (And still am, plus I have to thank for making Gaston sympathetic) and then Farqui here followed by Chairman Drek and Captain Gantu. I remember even wanting to own the action figure of him by McFarlane Toys...I was at the mall with my friends and this was around the time the movie was in theaters so there was a ton of Shrek merchandise in stores...I remember going to Toys R'Us and checking to see if they had the action figures of the characters in particular Farquaad, who was the one I wanted most...but they didn't have him in the store so I ended up getting the mascot instead. But on my way out from another store...what did I see? A Lord Farquaad action figure - standing there at the top of one figure pile - in its packaging - all by itself. Naturally, this caught my eye and I almost got to have him but....my friends and I left the store before I could say anything. Damn! Once again the elusive Farqui escaped me. And yes I wanted to have the bean bag plush doll of him as well. *sigh* Someday i'll find them. Well as I mentioned earlier, he's really funny especially when he tries to be threatening...which is mainly due to his rather miniscule stature. Plus, he has a very expressive face - again most computer animated characters do but I think he's got the best and most impressive expressions i've ever seen. Also John Lithgow did an awesome job of voicing him...not surprising considering that he's played a villain before including movies like Ricochet and the original version of Footloose, he was also in the Tales From The Crypt episode 'You, Murderer'. Of course him as Farqui was the first time I ever saw him in a movie or tv show, then I started watching episodes of 3rd Rock From The Sun and I loved it, i've also heard him singing songs on the kids family radio channel. Not to mention he was the villain in Cliffhanger - one of my favorite Stallone movies. What can I say? Farquaad, the little terror that he is - tugged at my heartstrings and made me pay the utmost attention. I also find it funny that in real life John Lithgow is 6'ft tall and yet Farqui is pretty much well...a tiny terror.
4. No characters I hate...I can try to hate Farqui as hard as I can...but I can't stay angry at him. Well he may have only wanted Fiona so he could become king without even realizing that Fiona was an ogress even though the Magic Mirror told him about the curse, but I can't stay mad at him...he's just too funny and likable to be hated. Plus...I just want to show off his facial expressions. Some of them are just priceless.
5. Farquaad: Really..it's rude enough being alive when no one wants you, but showing up uninvited to a wedding? (Everything in the wedding scene just cracks me up, including that aforementioned line. During my days as a wannabe fanfic writer I came up with a spin-off series about him, including a couple of things where he gets turned into things like a wolf or at least something akin to a werewolf, and even a rat. Yep...and I named my Elekid in Pokemon Crystal after him, I also did a Dungeons and Dragons inspired script about two were-rat siblings and a were-eagle who was sent after them, the sibling's uncle was also named after him and based on him. It's hard for me to hate him considering that the stage musical makes him sympathetic.)
6. What can I say? I LOVE Farqui's facial expressions.
7. Shrek and Fiona obviously although I used to ship the hell out of Fiona and Farquaad though...I know that he only wanted to marry her so that he could become king of Duloc but still....I shipped those two on a regular basis although I am not ashamed to admit that now. Kind of like I do now with Gaston and Belle. But of course Shrek and Fiona are a perfect couple despite being monstrous, and they have a lot in common.
8. Princess Fiona just is an awesome princess. Plus, she's the first monster-girl I ever saw. It's thanks to her I became fond of monster-girls like Santanico Pandemonium, Akasha, Felicia, Jun/Unknown, Lee from Critters 2, Amalthea, Serleena from Men In Black II, Irena from the 1982 remake of Cat People and of course the Monster High girls. Yep, Fiona was my first monster-girl.
9. Call me a bit of a sicko but I thought the 'Muffin Man' scene in Farqui's dungeon was hillarious. I just loved the exchange between him and Gingy, and of course where we see him marching through the halls. We hear this epic and ominous music with a pipe-organ playing in the background and it makes him come across as intimidating because the angle makes him look taller than he is, of course when we actually see him in the dungeon...he's a diminutive little monster. On the dvd, the producers say that they thought of the idea to give Farqui this introduction - to make him come across as intimidating in a way that's akin to Darth Vader marching. I am no picturing him as Dark Helmet from Spaceballs. Ironically this scene is now Hilarious In Hindsight considering John Lithgow's other iconic villain role is Arthur 'Trinity' Mitchell on Dexter.
10. When Shrek and Donkey have their own little feud and break up as friends. That and the whole wedding montage.
11. Fiona beating up Monsieur Hood and his merry-men. That woman is a badass! I can see why she and Shrek got along so well in the end, must be because of the whole having super-strength thing and being ogres helps too.
12. The big reveal of Fiona being an ogress. Farqui may have hated her because of this after this, but who could hate a monster-girl like that? No one that's who.
13. Oh..what the hell? One more pic of Farqui and his facial expressions. He looks really adorable in his armor, especially when he doesn't have those mechanical legs to make him look taller. He reminds me of an armadillo here.
