Canonically, Daemonheim is abandoned by those who dug the tunnels, as it has already served its purpose, now only inhabited by the forgotten.
Ironically, it can be jokingly said that it is also abandoned by the players, as it's difficult to find a team, especially since the only players who actively explore the dungeon are elitists who are extremely picky about who they let on their teams, preventing most players from making progress, and therefore, ever becoming 'good enough' to join them.
