When we first met Mygalomon earlier, it was mentioned in the story that another Digimon was responsible for this new "Overdrive Evolution", and here she is, The Spirit of the Machine: Gearmon!

A long time ago, there was a Digimon Spirit (akin to ones like Kazemon or Agnimon) who was content to stay behind the code that made up the Digital World. Errors and glitches don't just fix themselves, it was Gearmon's work that kept the Digital World running smoothly, using the power of the Drive Gears, oddly wondrous bits of code that, in times of need, can give systems a little extra push...

One day, curious, she emerged from behind the code and saw the beautiful and peaceful File Island... and also the evil Devimon. He saw the potential in her invention, the Drive Gears, so in a sneak attack, he and his minions sealed her into a Digi-Egg, and stole the Gears, which became twisted under his use; becoming the Black Gears that were used to corrupt and control evolve whichever Digimon he so chose.

Furious and embarrassed, Gearmon could do naught but stew in her Digi-Egg prison as her invention was misused. But after seeing strange visitors called "humans" emerge into the Digital World, and saw the power they bestowed upon other Digimon through nothing except their own positive qualities (and even besting Devimon, the Digimon who stole her invention), Gearmon wondered if the Drive Gears could do more than just empower computer systems - as she kept the only pure Drive Gear left on herself.

Several Digital Ages passed as she worked on her next project... but what she needed next, was one of these "humans" to help finish it. Gearmon had become a little more mobile in her egg, learning to traverse the internet for just the right person, and she happened upon Taylor Azures, a talented engineer and inventor with some interesting tastes...

Gearmon, posing online as a new friend, tricked the bright-eyed inventor into fixing the code of the Overdrive Gear. But the Spirit didn't predict what happened next; Taylor miraculously opened the Digi-Egg!

Emerging from Taylor's computer, Gearmon brusquely rewarded the confused inventor by offering her what she liked, and then told the truth of what she was. Gearmon was surprised of Taylor's confidence and nonchalance about the whole thing, saying that Digital personas are nothing new, and Spirits are not too surprising either - having already met both before. Nonetheless, Gearmon was free, the Overdrive Gear complete, and... and... she didn't know what to do next.

Gearmon decided to spend time with her new friend, sharing many ideas and proudly assisting in building Taylor's machines. Then one day, a message from the Digital World reached Gearmon; a call for help! The engineer offered to help, and Gearmon initially brushed her off... until remembering the power humans have... Opening the World Gate from Taylor's computer, the pair dove in, right into an evil Digmon attack! The battle went badly quickly, and Gearmon clearly didn't know how to fight - but Taylor did, bravely facing the towering monsters without abandon. Gearmon's Digi-Egg and Overdrive Gear started to glow, its code dissipated, merging into Taylor's body. The Spirit and Taylor were one, and their combined skills and intellect bested the monsters!

Gearmon reveled in their victory, while Taylor was surprised to be much taller. The call for help was worse than they imagined; a corrupted tower stood where File Island once was, and innocent Digimon lived in fear. The pair realised that they cannot tackle this alone... they're going to need help.
