Backstory- They were experimented on for years prior to the events of the show, being tortured every single day. Ultimately the experiments ended with Zander’s limbs being replaced with cybernetic replacements, among other enhancements to their body and senses. However after almost a decade of torment, they finally break free, and hide out in the woods for a while; too afraid to go back to civilization, fearing ostracization. After some time they end up befriending the Autobots, who take them in because they have nowhere else to go, and do everything that can to help the Autobots defeat the Decepticons; all the while learning to control their newfound abilities and the trauma of gaining them.
