Where: ZOOM Erlebniswelt Gelsenkirchen, Germany
For the longest time, it didn't seem like the Sengi was able to move or leave its spot. Near closing time - during our last stop - when it was raining outside, and it seemed as if the sun had set already it was that dark, they positively woke up! The activity was beyond anything we'd seen of the species before.
They'll normally move around a bit, but quiet time real quick. They didn't settle for long now. Of course, different individuals help too, but I can only say we had an amazing time with them.
This individual - so scruffy and large in looks while sitting here - went through a transformation as soon as he woke up. We thought we'd be able to recognize him, but no - the fur flattened, the face was all alert. It was like looking at a completely different animal.
Species: Round-Eared Sengi or Elephant Shrew (Slurfspitsmuis)
Latin name: Macroscelides Proboscideus
Originates from South Africa.
Current status: Least Concern
