We never know if or when we'll see her again.

They're really not that common in zoos, and seeing how hard it is for them to breed in captivity, we know that we are lucky to see her when we do. She's an old lady, and the zoo might not welcome a new individual when she passes.

We naturally hope she'll live to a grand old age in good health though.

Species: Striped Hyena (Gestreepte Hyena)

Latin name: Hyaena Hyaena

Originates from North and East Africa, the middle East and Central Asia.

Current status: Near Threatened

…The Striped Hyena is known to kill its own prey, and on rare occasions, attack humans.

…They are a monogamous pair, in which both male and female take part in raising the cubs.

…It’s a nocturnal animal, typically only emerging in complete darkness, and tends to quickly return to its lair at sunrise.

…Some people regard it as cowardly, for feigning death when attacked, but they’re also known to stand their ground against larger predators such as Leopards, in disputes over food.

…In Middle Eastern folklore, the Striped Hyena is often the symbol for stupidity and treachery, and becomes the physical incarnation of jinns.

…It is the national animal of Lebanon.
