Description
We're close to the end of the decade and I wanted to get into the Art of the Decade trend, but I also wanted to include the list of Original Character Tournaments I did during these 10 years. At first, I thought I would fit like 5 OCTs into the list, but MAN I didn’t realized that my entire time as an OCT competitor could fit in that time, 10 years IS a long lime.
I want to talk a bit about each one but feel free to skip it if you want. All OCTs I have participated in
with Mekuro, Fenix and Calcifer Made it to: Victory!
My very first OCTs! Even though I probably won't read it again (Right now I feel it's a bit cringy and not to mention my English was horrible back then) I still have fond memories of that tournament and the characters I used.
with Ken and Zero Made it to: Victory! This is the OCTs that I feel the lest proud of, the story Is not that well-made, and the characters are not bad but not great either. Honestly, I think the only reason I won was because most of the people who auditioned for the tournament forfeited.
number 2 with Mony . Made it to: Semi-finals.That’s right I'm including OCTs where I participated with my second account. This is my first OCT with a self-insert on it haha.... Ah well it was a Pokemon tournament I couldn’t resist! Anyway, Tt has some cringy moments, but I don't think it’s too bad, I had a lot of fun in this tournament and round 2 is my favorite one.
number 3 with Abel . (Partner with Inu-Tomate ). Made it to: Round 3The first OCT where I partnered with someone, this being an old friend of mine: devInu-Tomate: she created story and character and I made the art. Although I had troubles with her characterization at first, I think Abel is a great and adorable character and I would like to try using her again... if my friend is okay with that. Oh yeah, we got our butt kicked by Zeurel at that time.
with Fenix and Calcifer . Made it to: Round 4This is to date my favorite OCT. It had a special set of rules (No human characters, killing character was allowed and each character needed to be balanced) that for me, made it so unique and allowed for a unique dynamic in an OCT and I don’t see very often. My entries are not perfect, but I enjoy reading them for time to time to help me get through artist blocks.
with Mony. Made it to: Spectator Entries
with Wilbur . Made it to: Round 1
This is my shortest run in an OCT because I lost in round 1 to Seikame and mel-de-ly. Honestly, I felt really upset for that early loss, but I continued Wilbur's story in SE and, even though it's not the most polished thing, I liked how it turned out. Fun fact: Wilbur is my favorite OCT character.
with Wilbur and Marcus Made it to: Round 2I have mixed feeling for this tournament, on one hand I feel this was the time my storytelling was at its best, here is where I stared to focus more on character interactions, and I enjoyed playing around with my character and my opponent's. However, that time my life was really stressful, and I was obsessed to do everything right, including this OCT, and when I lost I felt so devastated that I almost considered quitting form OCTs. Fortunately, I'm better now and I enjoy reading those entries again.
with Oparin . Made it to: SemifinalsThis is my second favorite OCT for unique reasons. Unlike the rest of the tournaments where I joined because I feel inspired for the theme, I joined this one because I wanted a distraction from my early loss in the Tower tournament. But what ended up happening was a breath of fresh air for me, the uniqueness of this OCT made me experiment with things I never tried before, using flash comics with a game gimmick to tell the story but mostly Oparin, who is a character so dynamic and unique with his evolutions based of their opponents, It was so exciting that not even I knew what would they become end. Also, the community was very welcoming and thanks to all that I recovered my confidence in tournaments.
with Ao and Cecil (Partner with MockingMoth ). Made it to: Round 2What can I say? We're currently in round 2 so I can’t give an overall opinion of this tOCT yet. But so far, I been having fun and the community is very welcoming. After WizardPalooza I knew I wouldn't have the time to work in comics as I used to before, so I decided to make a team with MockingMoth and they have been a great partner! I hope we make it far into this tournament. UPDATE! We lost in the second round... Welp I guess I jinxed ourselves. Well it was good while it lasted.
I think overall, I have improved in my comic making skills and expanded to other media (Mostly flash) and, even though I don't have the same energy or time for OCTs as before, I hope I can still continue doing this hobby for a long time!
Bonus OCTs
The very first OCT I was a judge/host, and it was a Pokemon OCT taking place in my favorite region, Orre! There is a lot of things I could have done better for this tournament, and although it didn't went as well as I wanted to I still think it was a good first attempt.
The second OCT I'm currently hosting, heavily inspired by the Lost and Found OCT. We're in the last round and so far, I'm proud of my contestants, who surprised me by their perseverance, dedication and creativity. Again, I think there were things I could have done better but overall I'm pretty satisficed on how the tournament is going.
Calaveras OCT
It is a Dia de los Muertos OCT, of COURSE I would join to that one. Unfortunately the OCT didn't have enough auditions and it was canceled.
Wonderland OCT
There was a tournament about the distortion of time and space or something that I couldn't find. I auditioned for that and didn't make it in, but honestly the audition was so bad that I don't mind, I deleted it since then.
