Description
you might like to know how things go on with an ink painting while it is in the progress.1. draft
i have the strange habit of drawing draft on a4 rough paper, no matter how large the intended artwork is going to be.
this draft is drawn on three a4 papers. then i stick them together with scotch tape at the back
this way, i never have to worry that i don't have larger sized paper.
this draft is used as a guide for the painting. it is generally placed behind the minouwashi while i paint the different features in the artwork.
2. mountains and sky
paint from the back to the front, from the faint to the bold.
3. tree and raven
do outlines of the dried canes and tree trunk. wet brushes to fill in, dry brushes to touch up. Raven is done with relatively dry brush to facilitate bleed control.
4. horse
silhouette only, with some almost unrecognizable shades...
5. path
suggest the cracks and seams only.
6. wanderer
now the brush is seasoned with the ink and colors, i can do the man with greater ease.
7. hut, river and bridge
dilute the black ink and do the fences first, then the hut and the tree branches. then thrust the black inked tainted brush into orange/red/yellow/green as required to do the autumnal leaves. the river is suggested with horizontal strokes of a very dry brush.
8. calligraphy
this is done with a brush suitable for xiao kai (small square font)
later the rein for the horse and my signature seal in zhu sha (red pigment specially meant for stamp seals).
