Description With every action, there is a reaction. Cause and effect if you will. With every great strongman, there are bound to be challengers or kyptonite for that strongman. The Camel Rider is quite the challenge to the Cavalry, in particular the Knight. But how did this come to be? Well, the Camel was domesticated around the same time that other animals were domesticated. They could move across the desert in a way that horses could not. Horses needed water to be able to keep going. Camels weren't quite so limited. Also, horses were not used to the foul odors that came out of camels and so wouldn't come near them. This gave camels an advantage over horses and knights. Plus, they operated like light cavalry in that they could help take down an already heavily beaten army. So, yeah camels were useful in more ways than one. The Camel Rider is more prominent in AOE2 than any other game in the franchise as multiple units were created such as the Imperial Camel Rider and the Mameluke. They do make an appearance in the first one but as one of the Rise of Rome Units. Their purpose is simple: they are good against Cavalry in particular the Knights and later the Paladins. The Palmyran Camel Riders are the fastest in that game. They are less effective in the Iron Age as a counter to Cavalry which is quite contradictory because the Cataphract is a Cavalry Unit and Camel Riders are not as strong against the Cataphracts. Perhaps it's because the Byzantines are right next to Civilizations that have the camel and the horses there are probably a little more used to the odor of camels than other horses. That's just a theory. Not a Game theory, but an observational theory. If you know, you know. But otherwise, the Camel Rider is a very good Unit and can hold it's own.
