Description
[Most of my pictures from pompeii are in my scraps folder]So in pompeii, everybody was taking pictures of the wall paintings. These frescos were very important to romans, they did more than decorating the house and actually showed social status. They are often very detailed and can tell us lots about roman life, in a similar way to what we learn from greek vase paintings. However, until Giuseppe Fiorelli took charge of the excavations in 1860 there was about a century of looting of Pompeii. This is an example, where a painting has been stolen and taken to a private collection somewhere. Somebody in the world will still have this painting, knowing damn well where it came from but not be kind enough to let people see it nevermind give it back, or to a museum. We could know so much more about the romans if we could see all of these stolen items, and it sort of exemplifies the way in which people still today will happily do things for themselves even when it hinders things like education of scientific development. Art theft is kind of apt to DA, too I suppose, something we've all got to be vigilant against.
This should probably be a scrap but it's something that annoys me a lot so i put it here.
The painting would probably be categorised as the third style by Mau (wall painting categoriser dude), and i think I took this in the "house of the the tragic poet" though i can't be sure.
