Description
Photographed from Cais dos Botirões ... waiting for a Gondola to pass by.
look ... there's one!
It is the evening shift now and the restaurants along the canal are filling up with diners.
Seen during a ramble around Capela de São Gonçalinho, and the old town of Aveiro. We then retraced our way back to the Ria de Aveiro beside the Rua João Mendonça. On the way we passed through Parque infantil da Vera Cruz where a huge "host" of thousands of Sparrows had accumulated within two large trees and were delivering a loud cacophony of Sparrow opinion about the day's events.
A few Pallid Swift and around ten Swallows were patrolling about over the narrow streets around Capela de São Gonçalinho around 6:30 pm, having not yet relinquished their possession of the 2021 European Summer.
We were too late arriving in Aveiro to take a boat trip around the extensive Lagoons of Aveiro, and so we take a Gondola Boat Trip around the town's canals. There are relatively few active salt pans these days, with only one salt wholesale company - Salineira Aveirense still in operation at Antigo Cais de S. Roque, which we passed on the boat trip as we travelled along the northern boundary canal beside the A25 Road.
We arrived in Aveiro by train from Porto on a warm sunny breezy day, cooler than the previous 4 days in Porto. The weather became cooler and breezier yesterday evening.
We walked for a long time from Aveiro Railway Station along a long straight avenue toward the centre of Aveiro. When we finally arrive we settle down at Gelados de Portugal for coffee and icecream, before deciding what to do next. At some point I spot a Monarch Butterfly flittering about above the pavement beside Rua João Mendonça. This seemed at the time to be a rare and unlikely vagrant from America, but since then I have found out they have colonised Southern Portugal, and also here in the north around Aveiro:

After cafe refreshment Luciana marshals us across Jardim do Rossio where a handful of Swallows are scooting about in the sky overhead. We hurry to one of the boats taking tourists around the canals of Aveiro which is about to depart.
