TEXT

James was prepared to spend another Fourth of July alone. He'd been abandoned by his family and so-called friends when he'd come out as Trans, thinking that SHE would get some pushback, but otherwise just love and support. After all, everyone had always been supportive of James even if HE had never been the most masculine of 'traditional' member of the family. He was into the arts versus his family’s more athletic lifestyle. He was a little on the short side compared to the other men in the family. He was soft and rounder and more pale than his cousins. His hands lacked calloses and her always wore his hair longer than what was considered ‘normal’…But outside of some good natured barbs his family had never given him any reason to doubt their sincerity and understanding.

Even more so when he couldn’t deny the fact that as he grew older he started to feel as if he had always been in the wrong body, the wrong gender. It had scared him at first, but the longer he had the thoughts, the longer he looked in the mirror and saw HER staring out, there was just no denying it. Fear or not his family would help HER through it, right?

JULIE had brought her parents and grandparents and all of her friends together for a big family dinner on the Fourth of July, and had announced her intention to begin transitioning into the female that SHE had always wanted to be. After all, it'd be amazing to have a NEW birthday on the most celebrated night in America, right? But the smile on her boyish face had faltered, and then cracked entirely as she was met with a enormous backlash.

"NO SON OF MINE IS GONNA DISGRACE THIS FAMILY LIKE THAT" James's father had yelled while his mother had simply broken down into tears. James's grandparents had simply sat in stony, judgemental silence, glaring at their former grandson with quickly forming hatred.

"Dude, what!? No fucking way, you're one of those...freaks!?" James's best friend Kevin had yelled, before the rest of his friends began chiming in with hurtful slurs and derogatory remarks. Julie had fled to the bedroom of her small house in tears as her unwelcome guests eventually gave up berating her and demanding that the 'joke' wasn't funny. Eventually they'd all left, but Julie quickly learned that she was unwelcome around her family and that her 'friends' just wanted to insult and bully her. So long as she kept trying to be herself, that is.

Julie had suddenly realized what it was to be trans in the middle of a VERY conservative community, smack dab in the Bible Belt of the American Midwest. IT turned out it wasn't fun at ALL. The doctors she needed were nowhere to be found, and the few that existed were far and away, hours long trips from her smaller town into the big city. And all of it alone. Watching with regret as her body slowly shifted from a male into a female...Though not the one that she had always dreamed of being.

Two years in, the expenses of trying to transition were mounting up, the anonymous bullying and transphobic hate vandalism on her car and house and without ANY kind of support or the ability to just quit her also judgemental, but begrudgingly accepting job (after all, they didn't want to get sued for discrimination), Julie was considering just giving up. Her new hair wasn’t coming in right, she still looked too much like her old self and no amount of make-up or wigs were doing much to help her out. Everything that Julie seemed to do was just…wrong. A mistake, like everything else she felt had happened since that fateful night two years ago. But as easy as it might have seemed, she refused to take the…’coward’ way out. There was a better solution, and only one of them had to…had to die. She'd packed up her new clothes and had pulled her old man clothes out...And James was allowed to exist again, even if it felt wrong. Today, the Fourth of July, was the anniversary of what felt like nothing more than a bad, horrible and misjudged decision. Maybe it wasn't too late, if Julie just...went away and he was James again and admitted he was just being stupid, his family and friends would take him back. But in doing so he'd be giving up everything SHE had dreamed about. Sitting outside on the back porch of his tiny house, James stared at the river as the sun began to go down, having made his decision. He couldn't live alone anymore, couldn't be hated and despised for just wanting to be who SHE...who HE was meant to be.

James wasn't attending the city's fireworks show, he hadn't for two years, but instead he'd bought himself a single pack of sparklers from a roadside vendor  a couple of towns over, where he could be sure they wouldn't explode in his face or some other trap designed to hurt him physically rather than just emotionally. It hadn’t looked any different from the usual road-side vendors selling over-priced wares this close to the holiday, but he’d still felt…not compelled, but just a sudden desire to send off his alter-ego (or would it be true self and James was the alter-ego?) with a little bit of flair, rather than just send her back into the darkness. He’d bought a pack of sparklers from the grubby looking old man running the stand, gotten back in his little car, and had hurried home.

James popped open a beer and reached for the lighter, determined to at least give Julie a colorful send-off. He picked up the box of sparklers and looked at the bright and colorful label, and then flipped the box over, ignoring the usual ‘don’t light yourself on fire’ warnings.

‘We here at AMAGING Fireworks Company believe that fireworks are magical! That’s why we created are patented ‘Wish-Candle’ sparklers! Before lighting your sparkler, simply say your deepest wish! By the time the Wish-Candle has burned out, who know, maybe it will be granted!’ James rolled his eyes as he read over the words. Magic wasn’t real of course, but still that tiny part of him that hadn’t been crushed by the depression of the last two years had been…Not so much pulled, but the colorful rainbow packaging had caught his eye. But there was no more use wondering about it all…Or thinking about how he was going to have to bury Julie. He pulled a sparkler (or Wish-Candle, whatever) from the box, clicked on the lighter, and brought the two closer together.

“What the hell…I wish I could be who I was born to be, and that my family could be truly supportive of me! I wish I was Julie!” He whispered, touching the flame to the small, stick-bound firework, eyes widening as the golden sparks began intensely dancing downward. James stood there, suddenly entranced by the small lightshow, and never realized what was happening to him, or the reality around him.

His body slimmed and shrank, his weight issues not truly going away just…changing location as his hips widened, his rear and thighs swelling dramatically as the fatty tissues shifted in his body. The flab on his chest and arms pooled into his breasts, gaining substantial cup sizes as they pushed against his t-shirt, which itself was changing. Bones cracked and popped, though James felt none of it, his slightly larger brown eyes turning a shade of green as they stared into the sparkler’s golden flame. What hair that was left on his body released their roots and drifted to his shrinking feet, no longer encased in sneakers but now a pair of sandals that displayed tiny, adorable, shiny emerald painted toes to the world at the bottom of long, knock out legs. James’s fingernails extended outwards as his hands changed in front of his distant eyes, gaining green paint of their own as they slimmed and joined the slender new arms that were connected to a decidedly womanly torso.

The tattoo of a rose seeded into existence on James’s right arm, and his neck and Adam’s Apple grew longer, the voice box sinking into his skin until it had disappeared. His face was churning and changing, the round chubbiness gaining higher, more angular cheekbones, his lips gaining a layer of plumpness, not too much, across a slightly smaller mouth. His nose shifted and tickeled as it shrank in wideness and gained just a tiny bit of a cute upturn, while his hair flashed around his new face. It grew longer, dancing upon James’s pale, smooth skin as it whipped this way and that, turning many shades lighter until it was blonde. Then it styled itself in a cute set of golden buns on the back on his head, safely away from the fires that were edging towards the last of the burning powder, all tied up with a green headband that matched his new nails. The final change was the sucking, pinching sensation in his crotch as his already shrunken male genitals folded up into themselves, leaving nothing but a finely trimmed womanly slit that led to fully functional sexual organs behind it.

Julie blinked her eyes in confusion, coming out of her daze before puckering her lips and blowing out the rest of the sparkler before it burned down onto her hands. Satsified with the smoke curling from the spent firework, she let the stick drop to the ground, stepping on it with a small foot to make sure it was properly out. After all, she didn’t want some negligent act cause a fire. She reached over and grabbed her half finished beer, giving it a thoughtful sip as she thought about everything that had just happened.

There was a part of her that was still James. The magic that had just granted her wish hadn’t totally erased who she had been, but it had certainly done a number on her brain as well as her body. Thoughts of being born a girl, growing up as her parents daughter and being a big sister, as opposed to James being a single child. The lavish amount of spoiling her parents did for her, and growing from a pretty princess in pink to a tomboy who loved being outdoors just as much as she loved her movies and fashion. Julie went from an object of desire in High School to a full fledged, quirky beauty as she entered college, going in with skills she hadn't had but a few moments ago. She was a very skilled artist, a tattoo artist to be exact, having designed the killer sleeve on her right arm. Julie also worked on a webcomic, and was having some pretty decent success at running a Patreon (though she had the figure for it, she hadn't debased herself into running an OnlyFans). She was decent enough to do local cosplay, and had a not insignificant online following, though it was nothing extravagant or ground breaking. Julie still had to work, after all, and following graduation she had quit her barista job and was now working at a local tattoo parlour, while trying very hard to get noticed in the fashion industry. Tomboy or not, she now LOVED designing clothes, specifically big dresses.

She had new friends, both men and women, all from different walks of life as she now went into college not looking to simply get a degree and get a job, but to experience new things, to have new experiences and open her mind. Some of those friends, both men and women, were lovers in Julie’s new life, her nature switching to being bi-sexual. But the biggest thing was that she had been the voice of softening reason, tempering the attitudes of her parents and grandparents and allowing their once limited and conservatives minds to be open to new ideas and ways of living. And Julie had been able to act as the advocate, the support structure for her new little borther Kevin, who, much like James had been, trapped in the wrong body and wanted, desperately, to become Kelsey. She had made sure that Kelsey’s coming out had gone better than hers had (though had never happened in this timeline), and had made sure that despite their misgivings, the family was standing behind Kelsey, instead of standing in front of her.  Knowing what she did now, and eying the still plentiful pack of ‘Wish-Candles’ sitting on the patio table, Julie resolved to make Kelsey’s (and anyone else’s) transition perfect as possible.

God, Julie just finally felt so…so HAPPY!  And today was the best day of the year. Fourth of July, American Independence. But it was also her birthday.

Julie was, after all, born on the Fourth of July.
